Kuper has adapted short works by Kafka into comics before, but here he tackles the most famous one of all: the jet-black comedy that ensues after the luckless Gregor Samsa turns into a gigantic bug. The story loses a bit in translation (and the typeset text looks awkward in the context of Kuper's distinctly handmade drawings). A lot of the humor in the original comes from the way Kafka plays the story's absurdities absolutely deadpan, and the visuals oversell the joke, especially since Kuper draws all the human characters as broad caricatures. Even so, he works up a suitably creepy frisson, mostly thanks to his drawing style. Executed on scratchboard, it's a jittery, woodcut-inspired mass of sharp angles that owes a debt to both Frans Masereel (a Belgian woodcut artist who worked around Kafka's time) and MAD magazine's Will Elder. The knotty walls and floors of the Samsas' house look like they're about to dissolve into dust. In the book's best moments, Kuper lets his unerring design sense and command of visual shorthand carry the story. The jagged forms on the huge insect's belly are mirrored by folds in business clothes; thinking about the debt his parents owe his employer, Gregor imagines his insectoid body turning into money slipping through an hourglass. Every thing and person in this Metamorphosis seems silhouetted and carved, an effect that meshes neatly with Kafka's sense of nightmarish unreality.

Adult/High School-Gregor Samsa wakes up and discovers he has been changed into a giant cockroach. Thus begins "The Metamorphosis," and Kuper translates this story masterfully with his scratchboard illustrations. The text is more spare, but the visuals are so strongly rendered that little of the original is changed or omitted. Though the story remains set in Kafka's time, Kuper has added some present-day touches, such as fast-food restaurants, that do not detract from the tale. He has used the medium creatively, employing unusual perspectives and panel shapes, and text that even crawls on the walls and ceilings, as Gregor does. The roach has an insect body but human facial expressions. Once he is pelted with the apple, readers can watch his rapid decline, as his body becomes more wizened and his face more gaunt. This is a faithful rendition rather than an illustrated abridgment.

Gregor's plight, his growing alienation from his horrified family, and his gradual acceptance of the metamorphosis have come to be viewed as the quintessential symbolic depiction of modern existence. Against all expectations, Kuper's cartoonish style doesn't throw off the story's balance by accentuating Kafka's black humor. Rather, Kuper's visual depiction of Gregor's agony and the family's cruelty toward him points up what is disturbing in the tale, and the portrayal of Gregor's physical deterioration is truly harrowing. Moreover, Kuper's signature scratchboard technique, which resembles traditional woodcut style, suits the story's period, while his lively, expressive drawing lends contemporary vitality. Remaining faithful to its literary origin, Kuper thoroughly inhabits the tale, making his realization a genuine work of posthumous collaboration. The result is a Classics Illustrated with class. What a fine piece of world literature

Wow. What a fine piece of world literature. Story is grim, gripping, tautly written with tension mounting page after page. Crucial that reader understand Kafka's personal history/background, that particular era in Europe, as well as the intellectual influences that shaped Kafka as a young lawyer/writer. Influences include German realism, mysticism, Talmudic structure and logic, and French existentialism. Brilliantly imagined and I am so glad to have read it.

Strange and difficult

This has got to be one of the strangest books I've ever read. Is it a bad dream or is it the angst we all feel over our misdeeds. There were times I wanted to stop reading because it didn't seem to make sense. Now I'm quite sure it is not supposed to make sense. I'm not sure I would recommend this book to anyone a although the writing has a certain sort of genius to it. The book certainly evokes a number of feelings we don't normally like feeling.

If you love Hesse, you'll love this

I read it because it's a classic and I try to read a couple of year. The free Kindle version is not well-edited, which is a bit distracting (but what do you expect for free?). Having read Hesse in my younger days, I should have known what I was getting in early 20th century central European fiction. If you love Hesse, you'll love this. Unfortunately, I don't.

Fascinating Bio

Vincent Cronin presents a thorough portrait of one of history's most exciting female leaders. Catherine the Great ousted her husband to take the throne of a country viewed as an insignificant backwater by the rest of the world and upgraded its economy, educational system, artistic culture, health care system and industries at a time when women were considered incapable of either leadership or high intelligence.

Cronin explains her background and her personal relationships from reliable sources, including Catherine's own memoirs, written for her son to read after her death. Catherine's reputation suffered through the centuries due to the number of her openly sexual relationships. I can understand why he includes a list of her lovers here, although the fact that he "must" is infuriating, since male historical leaders rarely undergo such scrutiny. That this double standard continues to endure into the twenty-first century is a sad commentary on both Catherine's time and our own.

Cronin's history reads almost like a novel. His writing style makes the story intensely personal instead of coldly academic. This reader finds footnotes an annoying distraction, and there's none of that here. The sources are listed in depth in the back instead of splattered throughout the book. The result is a personal, intense experience that makes the reader feel as if they're in Catherine's orbit. I look forward to reading more of his work.

This is a fine biography of one of history's most formidable females. Highly recommend it!

Diamond Dust is full of treasures of short stories!

If you don't know Anita Desai, the Indian-German writer and author, you should get to know her. She might be the next Nobel Prize winner in literature. This compilation of short stories was picked up by me at a drugstore for only a dollar. The short stories include in this selection are Royalty, Winterscape about an Canadian Indian man and his unusual parentage, Diamond Dust which is truly a tragedy about a beloved animal, Underground about a British couple traveling abroad, The Man Who Saw Himself Drown is an unusual but entertaining story, The Artist's Life, Five Hours to Simla or Faisla, Tepozlan Tomorrow, and The Rooftop Dwellers. Desai's writing style is packed with details and information about the characters, the setting, and the story involved. Desai's writing style is easy to read but you have to read closely to really appreciate her style and language use. I loved Winterscape the best so far, broke my heart in Diamond Dust, was amused by a man who saw himself drown and lived to tell about it, and I'm working through the rest but I bet she doesn't disappoint her readers.

About the Author
James M. McPherson is George Henry Davis ’86 Professor of American History at Princeton University where he has taught since 1962. He received his BA from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1958 and his PhD from The Johns Hopkins University in 1963. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow, a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow, a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies in Behavioral Sciences at Stanford, and a Scaver Institute Fellow at the Henry E. Huntington Library in San Marino, California. In 1999, McPherson received the Public Humanities Award of the New Jersey Council of the Humanities. A leading Civil War historian and Pulitzer Prize winning author, McPherson has written many books including most recently, What They Fought For, 1861-1865 (1994), Drawn with the Sword: Reflections on the American Civil War (1996), For Cause and Comrades: Why Men Fought in the Civil War (1997), and Is Blood Thicker Than Water? Crises of Modern Nationalism (1998).

Civil War History

This Book my Mcpherson Is a great introductory book into the United States History From Civil War to Reconstruction. It reads like a novel, making History a fun adventure rather than a dull lecture. It provides immense details for both the casual reader and the Historian. If you'd like to know more about the History of America, the Union and Confederate forces, the influence the time period and war had on slavery this book is great.

The authority on the Civil War

It rarely gets more concise than this, enumerating the myriad of reasons the Civil War happened, while also making sure to point out that slavery was the biggest reason. The only issue I had with the book was that several people are given their full name only once and you're stuck with their last name for the rest of the book, which is problematic when you're trying to take notes.

I would also have appreciated more in depth coverage on the process by which the confederates decided on what to change in their "new" constitution.
