After the fall of its authoritarian regime in 1998, Indonesia pursued an unusual course of democratization. It was insider-dominated and gradualist, and it involved free elections before a lengthy process of constitutional reform. At the end of the process, Indonesia's amended constitution was essentially a new and thoroughly democratic document. By proceeding as they did, the Indonesians averted the conflict that would have arisen between adherents of the old constitution and proponents of radical, immediate reform. Gradual reform also made possible the adoption of institutions that preserved pluralism and pushed politics toward the center. The resulting democracy has a number of prominent flaws, largely attributable to the process chosen, but is a better outcome than the most likely alternatives. Donald L. Horowitz documents the decisions that gave rise to this distinctive constitutional process. He then traces the effects of the new institutions on Indonesian politics and discusses their shortcomings as well as their achievements in steering Indonesia away from the dangers of polarization and violence, all the while placing the Indonesian story in the context of comparative experience with constitutional design and intergroup conflict.

Donald L. Horowitz is the James B. Duke Professor of Law and Political Science at Duke University. He is the author of The Courts and Social Policy (1977), winner of the Louis Brownlow Award of the National Academy of Public Administration; The Jurocracy (1977), a book about government lawyers; Coup Theories and Officers' Motives: Sri Lanka in Comparative Perspective (1980); Ethnic Groups in Conflict (1985, 2000); A Democratic South Africa? Constitutional Engineering in a Divided Society (1991), winner of the Ralph Bunche Award of the American Political Science Association; and The Deadly Ethnic Riot (2001). Horowitz has been a visiting professor at the University of Chicago Law School and the Central European University as well as a visiting fellow at Wolfson College, Cambridge, at the Law Faculty of the University of Canterbury in New Zealand and at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. In 2001, he was Centennial Professor at the London School of Economics and in 2001-2002, he was a Carnegie Scholar. In 2009, he was presented with the Distinguished Scholar Award of the Ethnicity, Nationalism and Migration Section of the International Studies Association. Horowitz is currently writing a book about constitutional design, particularly for divided societies, a subject on which he has advised in a number of countries. In 2011, Horowitz was awarded an honorary doctoral degree by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the Flemish-speaking Free University of Brussels.

But like many mainstream political scientists who work on Indonesia Horowitz ...

There is a wealth of information in this book on the politics of constitutional change in Indonesia. As such it is a valuable reference. But like many mainstream political scientists who work on Indonesia Horowitz is not sufficiently critical of political outcomes post-Suharto. It is difficult to square this rosy picture with Indonesia's dysfunctional politics. His line, like many of his colleagues, is that it could be much worse. Yes, of course. This is very reminiscent of the praise that political scientists lavished on Suharto, that is, until he fell from power.

Germany and the Second World War: Volume II: Germany's Initial Conquests in Europe

Volume Two of this series covers the period from prior to the outbreak of the war on 1 September 1939 to approximately the end of 1940 and the failure on the part of Hitler to woo the Vichy French and the Spanish into a truly active alliance with the Third Reich. The volume has a copyright of 1991, was translated into English in 2003, has been compiled by four different authors and has nine parts. They are:
Part I- Politics and Warfare in the First Phase of the German Offensive.
Part II- Action Plans and Situation Assessments of the Luftwaffe and Navy before The Outbreak of War.
Part III- Hitler's First Blitzkrieg and Its Consequences for North-eastern Europe.
Part IV- The First Phase of the War at Sea up to the Spring of 1940.
Part V- Securing the Northern Flank of Europe.
Part VI- The Battle for Hegemony in Western Europe.
Part VII- The Operational Air War until the Battle of Britain.
Part VIII- The Second Phase of the War at Sea (until the Spring of 1941).
Part IX- Direct Strategy against Britain.
Almost all of these parts are subdivided into sections and sub-sections. Although a few consist of only one or two pages, most are appreciably longer. The intent of the authors (as described in the introduction) has been to present a general overview of events and not to become bogged down in details which are available elsewhere in more dedicated works. In this writer's opinion, they have been imminently successful, as the entire work (including index) is sufficiently detailed and yet contains only 444 pages.
The preliminaries to both the invasion of Poland (Case White) and the invasions of Norway and Denmark (Operation Weserubung) are well covered, as are the actual campaigns themselves. The actual campaign against France and the Low countries (Case Yellow) is less well covered in detail; the preparations for it are, however, presented very well and make clear that:
1. The basic- the very basic- concept of effecting a penetration south of Liege "to cut off the enemy forces assembled in Belgium" was first mentioned and demonstrated by Hitler himself in October of 1939 ( a concept which "completely surprised" the Army High Command), and that;
2. Lieutenant-General von Manstein (after consultation with Lieutenant-General Guderian) independently put together a far more wide-ranging plan of attack than Hitler envisaged.
Other points of interest in this work include details surrounding the resignation of Admiral Hermann Boehm, and the pre-war German Aircraft and Naval vessel production plans (the latter two of which appear to call into serious question the validity of Andreas Hillgruber's "Step-By-Step" plan which he attributes to Hitler.
Far more is available in this work which is well worth the investment, and I strongly recommend it- but only to serious students of the conflict. The presentation is dry and matter-of-fact, so buyer beware.

About the Author
Ronald M. Rapee, PhD, is currently professor in the Department of Psychology at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, and director of the Centre for Emotional Health. He has been involved in an advisory capacity with the DSM-IV and DSM-V, and he is a member of the US-government-sponsored Project Liberty, which works to develop anxiety management programs for children affected by disasters. He is on the scientific advisory committee for the Swiss Etiological Study of Adjustment and Mental Health, and the editorial board of several international journals.

Ann Wignall, M. Psych, is senior clinical psychologist and director of child and adolescent mental health for Northern Sydney Health Service. She founded the Child and Adolescent Anxiety Clinic, Royal North Shore Hospital, and works clinically with children and families with a broad range of anxiety and behavioral disorders.

Susan H. Spence, PhD, is professor of psychology and dean of the Division of Linguistics and Psychology at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. She was previously head of the School of Psychology at the University of Queensland, where she was also the head the School of Journalism and Communication for a time. She is a researcher and clinical psychologist who specializes in the assessment, prevention, and treatment of child and adolescent anxiety and depression. To date she has published more than 100 books and academic articles in her field.

Heidi Lyneham, PhD, is currently a research fellow within the Department of Psychology at Macquarie University and deputy director of the Centre for Emotional Health.

Concise advice produced quick results

Our six year old daughter has always been painfully shy in new situations to the point that it can prevent her from engaging in activities. Our first approaches of reassurance, expectation setting, and other suggestions gleaned from internet research never helped; however it only took reading this first chapter of this book to get several simple suggestions that made a huge difference. In fact we haven't read the rest of the book because using these tips (especially the "worry brain" drowning out the "calm brain" concept) we were able to help our daughter manage her anxiety. A month ago she clung to us every morning when we took her to her first grade classroom and had to be peeled off us by the teacher, sometimes in tears. Now she waltzes right in and I have to remind her to give me a kiss goodbye. She still gets shy in new groups, but the paralyzing fear is gone and we have tools to deal with it if it arrives. We may have only read a part of this book but it was money well spent.

I haven't finished the book yet, but this is the first thing we've tried that has really helped my 10 yo daughter. You have to follow the program, not just read the book. As we started having family meetings to learn about anxiety and do the exercises once/week, my daughter started talking more and more at those meetings and at other times about what's going on for her internally. I think the topics we cover in the meetings are helping normalize her experience, and frame it less as a "problem" and more as "life management". Her anxieties aren't all the type that are explicitly covered in the book, but we're finding it possible to extend the ideas to her stuff, with a little creativity. Working the exercises has helped us open some family discussions of things beyond the book, too. For example, last week we had a great chat about how people talk about anxiety as "worries and fears", but sometimes we'll say we're anxious when we're more overwhelmed than fearful or worried. Is that still anxiety? And do you manage it the same way? I'm so glad we're finally finding a way to talk about these things together, instead of having my daughter withdraw whenever the topic comes up.

This book was a great help for me. My 11yr old goes for therapy but I needed help dealing at home. I skip through to a part that pertains to the certain circumstance. Great help for any person that has to deal with an Anxious child.

I love to run and as a strength coach, I made it a point to create a program that would allow me to run as much as I wanted to after the injuries I had playing football. I had broken a leg and ruptured my Achilles- twice- and even though I completed the required rehab, I still experienced limitations whenever I would run.

About the Author
Michael Rosengart is a Strength Coach and has been coaching athletes and training clients since 2000. Michael loves helping people achieve success! His training method places a large focus on PreHab exercises and techniques, because preparation is a key ingredient to a great performance.�Michael was introduced to PreHab�through a seminar with the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Paradigm shifting

I've been doing prehab with Michael's program for over a year now and his book is a daily must for me. I have a job that I sit at a desk for many hours a day, like most people, and this book provides me the tools and know how to keep my running performance going in the right direction. I've tackled several ailments in my hip, my knee, and my back that weren't particularly severe but were limiting my ability to train. This takes a whole solution approach to getting the body back to a functional performance level This book has given me performance increases all while training less (due to time constraints from my job). The trainers i know and have worked with also agree that this is a must for athletes of any level to maximize efficiency and performance, so i'm pretty confident in the methods. I'm not so sure about the title of the book though because it seems to limit it to just runners. It can really work for any athlete, or non athlete for that matter.

You don't need to be active in a specific sport either. About the Author
Bruce J. West is Chief Mathematical Scientist with the Information Science Directorate at the Army Research Office, a position he has held for the last 10 years. After receiving his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Rochester in 1970, he was Associate Director of a small private research institute (La Jolla Institute) for almost twenty years and a Professor at the University of North Texas for a decade. His research interests are in the nonlinear dynamics of complex networks. He has over 350 scientific publications, including 11 books and 8500 citations, and he has received multiple academic and government awards for his research and publications.

Paolo Grigolini is currently a Professor in the Physics Department and the Center for Nonlinear Science at the University of North Texas. He is an internationally recognized theorist interested in the foundations of quantum mechanics, including wave function collapse and the influence of classical chaos on quantum systems. His other research interests include the foundations of statistical physics, biophysical problems such as DNA sequencing and the network science of human decision making and cognition.
