From Publishers Weekly
Tanaka's military SF classic has been unavailable in English for decades, but given the poor quality of this new translation, it's hard to say whether that was truly a bad thing. The saga follows two young commanders on either side of a galactic war: Reinhard von Lohengramm of the Galactic Empire, and Yang Wen-li of the Free Planets Alliance. Upon their first meeting in battle, each man distinguishes himself by utilizing unorthodox tactical maneuvers (which have their basis in military history). A web of political infighting on both sides slowly reveals itself, but Huddleston's prose is so slavishly devoted to Tanaka's original Japanese text that the path towards the meat of the book quickly becomes a slog. It's easy to lose interest long before the action picks up (no thanks to the unnecessary, lengthy prologue, absent in the fan-favorite anime adaptation). It doesn't help that Tanaka's nearly 35-year-old plot has aged rather poorly; with its overwhelmingly male-dominated story and shallow female characters, it's hard to find a place for this series among today's more nuanced SF. Yoshiki Tanaka's epic space opera finally gets an English release--and it is incredible.
By Foxof
For the uninitiated, Yoshiki Tanaka's sprawling science-fiction epic, "The Legend of Galactic Heroes" is a massive saga spanning 10 main novels and several side-stories. It has been adapted into multiple mediums, including animation, film, manga, audio drama and ballet. My review will be brief and--please do not worry--spoiler free.

On the series as a whole....

Much like the venerable "Mobile Suit Gundam" franchise, the Legend of the Galactic Heroes is sometimes referred to as the "Star Wars of Japan." Though, personally, given the scope, scale and themes of the story I find Frank Herbert's Dune to be a more suitable analog.

The Legend of the Galactic Heroes is best described as a "Historical Epic / Space Opera." Tanaka writes less as a storyteller and more as a historian. Characterization is sparse (but adequate) and the story moves at a fairly swift space whose course is charted just as much by the (sometimes anticlimactic) whims of history as the dramatic arcs of its characters. As is so often the case in our own histories, the cast of relevant characters is enormous, though many find themselves mere bit players. The focus of the narrative is on two protagonists: Reinhard von Lohengramm, a brilliant admiral serving the autocratic Galactic Empire; and his equal-but-opposite, the genius Yang Wen-li, in the democratic Free Planets Alliance. The galaxy-spanning war between these two nations serves primarily as a backdrop for the conflict between these two men who, despite their many similarities, adhere to opposite political ideologies.

First published in 1982, the Legend of the Galactic Heroes is one of the few series in science-fiction truly deserving of such adjectives as "epic" and "classic." The adherence to fairly realistic "hard science fiction" technologies and tactics makes the battles--and the imaginative, unorthodox tactics frequently used to end them--a joy to behold, and the ideological and thematic conflicts add a great deal of depth and significance to the trials and triumphs of Reinhard and Yang as they struggle to fulfill their personal ambitions.

On Volume 1: Dawn....

Where Tanaka's masterpiece may fall short for some readers is in its overall style: with its focus on the historical narrative instead of the personal narrative, the story (like history) never really reaches an end point--there is always the question of, "and then what happened?" The text can also be a bit dry, particularly the forward to the first book, which is a 15-page overview of galactic history prior to the events of the novel proper. More problematic, perhaps, is the series' frequently-criticized depiction of women. Despite the very large cast of characters, there are very few women--only two of whom are important characters. While a more shallow reading of Tanaka's work might cause one to label the text as outdated, or its author as misogynist, I think it's important to view these things within the context of the work. The setting of the Legend of the Galactic Heroes is deeply conservative, and modeled after authoritarian states in our own history. Where the Galactic Empire embodies aspects of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Nazi Germany, the Free Planets Alliance takes its cues from Imperial Japan and the McCarthy-era United States. Both societies originate from the same source: a rigid totalitarian regime where women were subjugated, homosexuality outlawed, and birth defects, genetic disorders and physical disabilities punishable by death--a state that spent centuries weeding out "undesirable" elements of the population with zero moral compunctions.

The Legend of Galactic Heroes is not Star Trek--neither political state is set upon a Utopian pedestal. Both societies are deeply, fundamentally flawed--and these flaws become an integral part of the unfolding story. It is easy to callously dismiss the lack of female characters (or non-white characters, or gay characters, or disabled characters) as bigotry on the author's part, or as a sad social relic of a story written in an older, less enlightened era, but doing so is both lazy and inaccurate. It is vitally important to recognize that these aspects of the story are deliberate, integral parts of the setting designed to help define the setting, juxtapose the two opposed nations, and demonstrate the inherent problems in the societies that both of the heroes are fighting against. It is extremely important to recognize the difference between an author depicting specific social or political ideologies and actually advocating specific ideologies--and one of the greatest aspects of the Legend of the Galactic Hereos saga is that Tanaka presents a wide variety of different opinions, ideologies and institutions, using the narrative to illustrate both the good and bad of each system, while leaving the reader to make up his or her own mind about the validity of each.

Daniel Huddleston's translation is very faithful to Tanaka's original Japanese, which is both a good and bad thing. Translation in general is a very difficult task that requires a great deal of fluency, imagination and (perhaps most importantly) a respect for the original work as well as the willingness to change it. Much of the English prose is very well written, but occasionally suffers from excessive verbosity or unclear syntax. Thankfully the text is mostly free of editing errors (though I did notice a few incorrectly-placed apostrophes) and reads easily and well.

In the grand scheme of the Legend of the Galactic Heroes saga, Book I: Dawn is, perhaps, the least important, least memorable story. Here is an introduction to the chief characters, and the worlds they inhabit. Make no mistake: the pace of history proceeds at its usual breakneck pace, and the cycle of war, peace and revolution is fully present in Book I: Dawn. The story is absolutely enthralling, and at its conclusion the reader is left with a burning desire to know what happens next as one riveting, climactic arc rolls deftly into another. Dawn accomplishes its goal of establishing the galactic status quo in a fiercely interesting story, so when that status quo is turned upon its head at the end of the first novel, we are left desperate with anticipation for what the future will bring.

To summarize: the Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Volume 1: Dawn is a science-fiction epic of enormous scope and scale that weaves a complex narrative involving compelling characters, conflicting social and political ideologies, and the immutable, intractable forces of history. This book is often inspiring, always enthralling, and one I absolutely recommend to anyone fond of great science fiction or historical epics.

A great read for someone interested in Space Opera
By Keaton Kaplan
A great read for someone interested in Space Opera. I had heard about this series, but never watched the anime. However, when I heard that the first three novels were being released in English for the first time, I jumped on board. This novel is extremely well written in its English translation, and is a good read. It is not the most "fast-paced" beginning to a series, but there is some really cool political building and rising tension. The characters are all fleshed out in the story, especially Yang Wen-Lei. Overall, a good beginning to what looks to be an interesting story full of deceit and conquest.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes reads like a dramatized historical account of events not yet past
By Patrick J. Price II
Legend of the Galactic Heroes reads like a dramatized historical account of events not yet past. Yoshiki Tanaka is supremely interested in the big picture of future politics and, though it can be a bit stiff at times, this book reads like a very engaging history lesson. Of course, it's the "history" of a future mankind that has colonized the stars.

Yang Wen-li is a delight. Too often are starbound Sci-Fi novels pre-occupied with the Star Wars aspect of space fiction, with courage and action being at the forefront of a protagonist. Discretion is the better part of valor and Yang embodies this with a quiet, tactical mind and refuses to let himself be caught up in the furor of blind patriotism or the "glory" of war.

I would say it's appropriate for all ages, but unless they're reading above their grade level, consider 15 years old to be a minimum for the age of the reader if you plan to give it as a gift.

The Six-Day Bicycle Races: America's Jazz-Age Sport, by Peter Nye

A photographic portrait of what was the most popular spectator sport in America during the period from 1900 to 1930: 6-day bicycle racing. It was a big-money sport, because bets were on. The sport was tough and the stakes were high, as the most prominent people in society flocked to Madison Square Garden to watch the races and place their bets. This compilation of historic photographs reproduced in fine duotone detail and accompanying text paints the complete picture of this fascinating but almost forgotten era in American sports.

Review
As cycling reaches new heights of popu-larity in America, Peter Joffre Nye contin-ues to remind us that this era is but a renais-sance. For the charity rider enamored with the novelty of the sport, this book will be pulling back leaf after leaf as you enter a lush garden of the Halcyon days of American cycling. At the turn of the 19th Century, cycling enjoyed a popularity few realize in the smothering pop kitsch that is baseball. The center of that popularity was the Six-Day races held on tracks throughout the U.S. This pictorial history is great to leave around your house or office, because it has just enough layover to an earlier generation of household names known only to Baby Boomers. Jimmy Durante, George Burns, Gracie Allen, Rudy Vallee, and Jackie Cooper were all fans of the races held at Madison Square Garden. Damon Runyan, perhaps the great-est sports writer of the 20th Century, heralded the sport. And the year Ty Cobb earned $5,000 playing baseball, Bobby Walthour Sr., made $20,000 racing bikes on the board tracks. This book also drills home some beauti-ful bits that given the tech-nology of the time drops the jaw of today s hard-core cyclist. For example, the original six-day races were solo marathons in which rid-ers often crashed heavily after falling asleep at the wheel. Charles Miller of Chicago, the king of the one-man sixes, would put Chris Eatough to shame, riding 2,105 miles in the first Madison Square Garden event. The concern for those racers wellbeing sparked such a protest the two-man six-day race was developed. Peter Nye s research and writing sparlde, but just enough to keep astride the photos collected by Jeff Groman for this book. Nicely done are the touches to include Jackie Simes and Marty Nothtstein, which leaves the rider a sense of optimism going forward. This is a splendid book and a great gift. No, we won t give back our promotional copy. Richard Fries, in Bike Culture East --Bike Culture East, No. 138, Summer 2007

Press Review: Bicycling Magazine January 2009 On the dedication page of The Six-Day Bicycles Races, America's Jazz-Age Sport, the authors of this homage to velodrome bicycle racing in the United States thank their families for "giving them the blue-sky to rescue the history of this once robust sport." The 225 pages that follow are hardly a rescue mission; more a labor of love by three men who invested their time, care and enduring passion to bring a period when cycling was king to life. Peter Joffre Nye takes the lead on Six-Day Bicycle Races, backed by the contributions of cycling historians Jeff Groman and Mark Tyson. The result is a meticulously researched and elaborate coffee table book featuring stories, photographs, news clippings and memorabilia from an era when bike racing captivated our collective conscious and cyclists were the major league sports heroes of the time. Six-Day Bicycle Races begins with high wheel bicycles in the 1870's and ends with Americans Marty Nothstein and Ryan Oelkers claiming victory at the Moscow Six-Day in 2002. It was the first US Madison team claimed victory since Charlie Bergna and Cecil Yates won Cleveland in 1949; and one that was built on the blood, sweat and guts of the legends found on the pages in between. Six-day racing is one of the most grueling, physically demanding sports of all time. This book captures its birth and will be cherished by anyone who loves riding or racing bikes, sports history, or has ever been mesmerized by the fast-paced, adrenaline rush of velodrome track racing. Liz Reap Carlson, Bicycling Magazine --Bicycling Magazine, January 2009

About the Author
Peter Nye is the author of Hearts of Lyons, the story of bicycle racing in America, and one of America's foremost bicycle racing historians. He also wrote the script for the upcoming PBS documentary about 6-day racing, which uses many of the photographs presented in this book.

Words, Photos Work Hand-in-Glove
By R. J. Czajkowski
An outstanding reotrospective of a not-so-long-ago sport now lost to time. The packaging and photos work hand-in-glove with the words to make the reader feel as if he were a part of the cycling frenzy of this era. In today's pop-culture mindeset where things are forgotten and discarded in a flash, this book does justice to a unique aspect of "Americana" that should be, and now is preserved.

The Six-Day Bicycle Races: America's Jazz-Age Sport.
By Bill McGann
There was a time, not really long ago, when American bicycle racers were the most highly paid athletes in the country. In the 1980's we dropped our jaws when Greg Lemond signed a contract that paid him a million dollars over 3 years. Yet even today, the total price of a Pro Tour team won't get you a major-league pitcher with a good fastball.

Back in the early 1920's things were very different. Babe Ruth was paid the then princely sum of $20,000 a year but six-day bicycle racer Frank Kramer made more. Movie stars would crowd into smokey indoor tracks and offer primes as high a $1,000 to goad racers into driving themselves ever harder as sold-out bleachers screamed with excitement. The great boxer Jack Dempsey's promoter was stunned to learn that the attendance of six-day races averaged 100,000 paying customers. At least one successful six-day racer paid cash for a house.

Now largely forgotten, there was a circuit of velodromes that went across America, stretching from Los Angeles and Salt Lake City to Newark and New York City. The racers who competed on the wooden boards of the era were an elite, highly paid group of athletes who could take on the best in the world and beat them. Among the Europeans who traveled to the U.S. to race on our tracks were Tour de France winners Petit-Breton and Octave Lapize and Italian greats Giuseppe Olmo, Alfredo Binda and Costante Girardengo. As with road racing today, Australians seemed to be natural six-day racers and the list of Aussies who did well is long, including one of the greatest of all, Alf Goullet.

A modern Tour de France rider covers about 3,500 kilometers (2,200 miles) over 3 weeks. In 1914 the six-day team of Alf Goullet and Alfred Grenda raced the Madison Square Garden Six-Day and set a record that still stands, 2,759.2 miles in 142 hours. These men were magnificent sportsmen and their accomplishments were prodigious.

Great writers, including Ernest Hemingway, James Thurber and Damon Runyon, were drawn to the 1920s track scene and wrote about it. In 1925 President Calvin Coolidge invited the team of Jimmy Walthour, Jr and Freddie Spencer to the White House because he wanted to meet the two cyclists whom he said competed with him for newspaper headlines.

I ask the reader to stop for a minute. Have you ever heard of these men, the Armstrongs and Lemonds of our grandfather's time? Like so much of early and mid-twentieth century Americana, this spectacular part of our past is slowly getting wiped out of our collective memory. It shouldn't be so.

Nye's visually stunning book, The Six Day Races: America's Jazz-Age Sport is an irresistible scrapbook of those exciting years when bicycle racing had a firm grip on the American imagination. Pictures of dapper men in bowler hats and starched collars watching speeding racers steam around banked velodromes instantly conjure up another time. There's Petit-Breton, winner of the Tour de France, who competed at Madison Square Garden in 1903 and 1904. Another turn of the century picture shows a young man proudly standing with a bike that rather resembles one of Graeme Obree's record machines. Is there anything new in the world? Eddie Cantor, May Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, George Burns, Gracie Allen and Jimmy Durante went to the races and Nye has pictures of them that capture the mixture of sport and glamour that the Sixes represented.

Perhaps the image that most powerfully conveys bicycle racing's place in the 1920s is one photograph from 1925 showing eight athletes, called the "Kings of Sport", who were invited to a banquet at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York. Most of the names will be familiar: Babe Ruth, boxer Gene Tunney, swimmer and future movie star Johnny Weissmuller, hockey star Bill Cook, Wimbledon champion Bill Tilden and golfing great Bobby Jones. Sitting with the other sporting giants, as equals, are cyclists Freddie Spencer and Charlie Winter.

Accompanying the hundreds of photographs is an excellent text. Perhaps no man knows more about American cycling than Mr. Nye. An earlier book of his, Hearts of Lions was more than the best history of American cycling ever written, Nye performed an important service by interviewing many of the great legends of America's golden age of racing, several just before they passed away. In The Six Day Bicycle Races Nye puts that knowledge to good use, guiding the reader from American track racing's origins in the late 19th century through its bloom of prosperity and its slow decline with the onset of the depression.

After reading the book, I still like to go back and thumb through a few pages here and there, imagining a band playing in the infield while the racers zoom around a short (10 laps to the mile) indoor track doing their flashy, dangerous work. Reggie McNamara crashed more than 1,500 times in a career of 108 six-days that covered about 135,000 miles. I wish I could have seen that brave, strong man race. Nye's book brings me as close as I can come to that dream.

This is a wonderful book written by the man who knows American racing best, filled with pictures that have the power to get any sports fan's heart thumping.
-Bill McGann, author of "The Story of the Tour de France"

Does the job for the self taught
By Menoc
I am half way through this book now and I've only encountered one situation where i needed clarification. I turned to the internet for my question and I'm still not convinced it wasn't the book but my misunderstanding of the software. I will say that I am new to Revit and am self-learning. The book is worth it. I'm going to go through one time then again doing my own design. I believe if you are teaching yourself Revit, this book will do the job.

First time user of Revit
By Jerry Lloyd
The company I work for was awarded several projects at a state university that requires 3D renderings. I have never used anything besides cad and never 3D. It took me about 4 days to go through the exercises in the book. I had to refer to it several times but have finished our first project. This book is a great learning and reference tool. Highly recommend to anyone learning Revit.

A bright star in Autodesk learning manuals
By Robert M.
The manual is surprisingly good in flow but also some imprecise and confusing at instances like the Autodesk software itself. Could be written with always the goal more clearly displayed at Chapter beginnings and explained in detail every chosen parameter later. Although excellent for an Autodesk software manual. The thing which is very much missing in it is a full metric users support in the text or a metric users version of the book. All together I would recommend it for all solo Revit learners with solid English language capability. For the price you don't get any better option on the market.

Charles I and the People of England, by David Cressy

The story of the reign of Charles I - through the lives of his people.

Prize-winning historian David Cressy mines the widest range of archival and printed sources, including ballads, sermons, speeches, letters, diaries, petitions, proclamations, and the proceedings of secular and ecclesiastical courts, to explore the aspirations and expectations not only of the king and his followers, but also the unruly energies of many of his subjects, showing how royal authority was constituted, in peace and in war - and how it began to fall apart.

A blend of micro-historical analysis and constitutional theory, parish politics and ecclesiology, military, cultural, and social history, Charles I and the People of England is the first major attempt to connect the political, constitutional, and religious history of this crucial period in English history with the experience and aspirations of the rest of the population. From the king and his ministers to the everyday dealings and opinions of parishioners, petitioners, and taxpayers, David Cressy re-creates the broadest possible panorama of early Stuart England, as it slipped from complacency to revolution.

Review

"Cressy has done sterling work showing how popular discontent magnified the restiveness of the gentry like a vast echochamber. His is the best book on the Civil War that I've read for a while." - BBC History Magazine

"This is a rich account, brimming with details culled from a huge range of original sources" - Noel Malcolm, The Telegraph

"A brilliantly evocative account of the life and times of Charles I, as seen primarily from the perspective of the millions of ordinary English men and women who lived under his rule. Drawing on an impressive array of archival and printed sources, Cressy is able to recreate the concerns and reactions of those usually hidden from history to provide a fresh perspective on the shortcomings of the Caroline regime and the origins of the English revolution." --Tim Harris, author of Rebellion: Britain's First Stuart Kings

About the Author

David Cressy was born in England and educated at Cambridge, but built his career in the United States. He has taught at colleges and universities in California, Ohio, and New Mexico, and has won numerous fellowships and awards. His work is driven by curiosity about the relationships of central and local authority, elite and popular culture, official and unofficial religion, and ordinary men and women, a curiosity that ranges from kinship to book-burning, from cross-dressing to Gypsies. When not engaged in historical research he may be found exploring the deserts and beaches of the American West.

Well worth reading several times over
By Elenchus
This is a great book, particularly because the level of scholarship required to about a broad range of ordinary people is so rare. Cressy applies his 30+ years of careful research and sophisticated thought in ways that both build upon his previous work and open wonderful new lines of inquiry.

This is an unexpurgated reissue of the rare and long out-of print 'how to' book by Jimmy Cauty and Bill Drummond, aka The KLF, their 'Zenarchistic' step-by-step guide to having a number one single in the official UK charts. First published in 1988, this edition includes a new introduction by Jon Savage and an afterword by Bill Drummond, and explains all the steps needed to guarantee success, as pioneered by The Timelords (another alias) with 'Jamming the Tardis'. The Manual is an unparalleled expose of the reality behind the pop-music business and while names may have changed since its first issue, the mechanics of financing, producing and promoting a hit set out here remain absolutely relevant. .

Everyone's a winner
By A Customer
This book pulls no punches when it analyses the UK's pop industry. The references may be lost in the US but if you can locate someone who lived in the UK in the late 80's, they can fill in the blanks.
The writing style is compulsive and the book is hard to put down. I have every confidence that ,if you have the courage to follow this book , you will get to number one. The authors have got to number one on two occasions and had a nummber of near misses.
This books looks at ways to "produce" your number one, manipulate the charts but misses out how to make a great video.
For anyone who wants to have a number one in the UK this is a must.

There's no business
By Roger Flanaghan
These guys are what we should all aspire to be. They've burnt one million pounds, walked to the north pole to sacrifice a tiny picture of Elvis, worked with norwegian comics' grand old man ystein Runde sr, nailed 100 000 pounds to a piece of wood and sold it for 50 000 pounds, and now they're going to sell you the ticket to one-hit-wonderland. A pop hit is guaranteed if you follow their instructions. Really. Guaranteed.
Now, go and make mom some pop.

Drummond's Gift
By Kurt Koller
Most of Drummond's writings are filled with optimism and a "just do it" attitude. This is no exception. Probably dated and localized for a U.K. audience, I found it a great read nonetheless.
