About the Author
Robin Wang is Daum Professor in the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts, Professor of Philosophy and Director of Asian Pacific Studies at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles. She is the editor of Chinese Philosophy in an Era of Globalization (2004) and Images of Women in Chinese Thought and Culture: Writings from the Pre-Qin Period to the Song Dynasty (2003).

Perfect Balance

This is a masterful book, on a fascinating concept that has depth and resonance. It's well written, and comprehensive while staying short enough to comfortably read. If you want to go further, it's extensively footnoted with a complete bibliography and index. While we might sometimes hear of the "yin and yang of buying a toaster oven" we really don't have any idea of what this means other than hot/cold up/down. And as is gently explained, hundreds of years of Chinese thought and practice lead to an understanding of the nature of the universe and ourselves that is much deeper than the ends of a yardstick.

The book shows us forces are not dualistic. But rather interdependent, reciprocal, and intertwined. And more. Yinyang illustrates change. And illustrates emergent properties (the circle) that are different from any of the constituents. And more. It illustrates consistent patterns: "It is like the standing wave that emerges in a moving stream, where the water particles are constantly changing while the pattern persists." History, cosmology, Western & Chinese philosophy, pictorial thinking, psychology, religion, and much more interplay in this extraordinary book. I hope you find this review useful.

An absolutely brilliant work of deep, sympathetic scholarship.

As a longtime student of Chinese philosophy - and the practical application of those philosophies in martial arts - I'd thought I knew something about Yingyang. This book made me realize both how little I actually did know about the concept - but more importantly, how little I was able to put into practice. Dr. Wang's extremely wide ranging scholarship illumines Yinyang in a way I've never seen - and makes the concept a part of one's lived experience, and not simply an interesting philosophical idea. Now, this is not a light read. It's an extremely dense, compact work of scholarship. But that very effort of reading ensures that the concepts don't remain superficial - but are integrated into one's ideas, thinking, and action.

My only reason for 4 rather than 5 stars is I feel the book over emphasizes Daoism, without giving sufficient attention to the Confucian tradition - but that's not uncommon. And a few areas could stand more aggressive editing.

But those points are minor. This book is a model for what scholarly philosophical writing should be.

Shield-Spear/ yingyang is a Thinking Paradigm

Correlative thinking is yinyang thinking. For example, yinyang is not just an important tool for grasping the cosmic body, namely the universe; it is also applied to the micro body: "human flesh". The human body bears the same rhythm and properties as the greater cosmic body. Yinyang presents a justification for this association and a conceptional tool for understanding it.
Yingyang is a thinking paradigm. Paradigms precede and shape all the operations of: rational thinking methodically, theory building, the determination of facts, and perception. A paradigm is a conceptual configuration that is demonstrated and learned by example, providing a lens through which one can view the world.
At the same time, yingyang can also be seen as a constellation of lay beliefs and practices, functioning explicitly and implicitly, in activities ranging from philosophy to health care, and from warfare to a way of life.
The bases of any yinyang distinction is difference, opposition, and contradiction. Any two sides are connected and related, but they are also opposed in some way. It is also this difference that enables yinyang as a STRATEGY - to act sucessfully, we must sometimes be more yin and sometimes more yang, depending on context.
The reader can surmise the ambiguity and complexity in saying that two things "are like yin and yang". Everything is bound up in a plurality of relationships, at the sametime; related both to multiple things, and to the same thing in multiple ways. But yinyang thought, really is a type of triadic thinking, centered on the thirdness, that results from the interaction between yin and yang. The whole is made of the interaction between parts; not the individual parts, themselves.
Surprisingly, the focal point of yinyang as a strategy - is on generation and transformation/a chicken giving birth to an egg; and as the egg hatching into a chicken. The production that stem from both of these kinds of generation, brings out new phases of existence. Yinyang plays a central role in such generative processes.

About the Author

Grandmaster Boris Gelfand won the European Junior Championship in 1987 and reached No. 3 in the World in 1990. He has led the Israeli team to numerous medals at both European and Olympiad level. Gelfand won the 2009 World Cup and has participated in six Candidates cycles, winning it in 2011. He lost the 2012 World Championship match in the play-off. At 46 he is still winning tournaments ahead of the best players in the world, in many cases men half his own age.

Grandmaster Jacob Aagaard is the only chess author to have won all the major awards for chess writing.

Positional Lessons from Gelfand!!

Even though I'm hardly into this book yet I figured I would publish a review as there is hardly anything posted yet. This book was going to be on my wish list but I just couldn't resist and bought it anyway. Like the other two Quality Chess books I own (Learn From the Legends and Advanced Chess Tactics) this one appears to be a gem. It includes five chapters : 1. Playing in the Style of Akiba Rubinstein 2.The Squeeze 3.Space Advantage 4.Transformation of Pawn Structures 5.Transformation of Advantages. The Appendix contains an interview of Gelfand from 2012. I've 'read' through much of the book without putting in the necessary work to get any improvement out of it but enjoy it immensely already. I'm only a 1700 player but feel like I can learn a lot here. There is deep analysis but also plenty of regular English for amateur/club players to understand Gelfand's thinking and ideas. What really attracted me to the book was the fact that I would get to see Rubinstein's games, a player I've always wanted to study, through a top players eyes. In addition to this there are fully annotated battles of Boris versus lots of the Worlds elite including Carlsen, Anand, Kasparov, Aronian, Grischuk and Morozevich. Basically I can't wait to put the time into this book that it really, really deserves! Stevenson's _Humus Chemistry_ is THE source on soil organic matter (SOM), namely humic substances. It played an instrumental role as a reference in support of my masters thesis. I would recommend the book highly to anyone taking a course and/or with a serious interest in any aspect of SOM.

which I found to be tedious, if not boring

HUMUS CHEMISTRY arrived very soon after I ordered it. HUMUS CHEMISTRY ihas much information about the chemistry and nature of humus. Much of the book, however, is devoted to materials and methods. Since Stevenson, the author, is an active researcher, I can understand HUMUS CHEMISTRY's having so much background about materials and methods. The materials and methods also helps to explain the often contradictory results obtained by various researchers. Because so much time is devoted to materials and methods, which I found to be tedious, if not boring. This is not a book for someone who wants to learn about HUMUS, per se.

The only complaint I might have with this book is the format, it's a big book, and given how often I need it, a smaller handbook (like the CRC handbook) would be more convenient. But then that might hurt the readability.

The book itself however is awesome, comprehensive, readable, plenty of illustrations, minimum of jargon, and useful for engineers and scientists.

About the Author

Becky Koenig is an artist, educator and author, she has exhibited her artwork in the Western New York region and nationally. Ms. Koenig has an extensive history of studio art education in drawing, painting, design and color theory at colleges in the Buffalo, New York area including: Villa Maria College, Medaille College, Canisius College, Buffalo State College and the University at Buffalo. She has been on the staff of the Department of Visual Studies at the University at Buffalo since 2003 as an academic administrator and instructor in studio art. Her textbook on color theory, Color Workbook, published by Prentice Hall, is currently in its Fourth Edition.

Becky Koenig received a BFA from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, and a MFA from the Department of Art, SUNY at Buffalo.

Her work has been exhibited at Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center, Burchfield Penney Art Center, Albright Knox Art Gallery, UB Anderson Gallery, all in Buffalo, NY, Niagara Community College Art Gallery, Sanborn, NY, Carnegie Art Center, Tonawanda, NY, Adams Memorial Art Gallery in Dunkirk, NY along with many other sites.

I teach color theory, and this is the book I recommend to my students. I've tried some of the others, and none compare. It includes everything you need to understand color, whether you are a painter or designer, and it's clearly written and well organized with good visual examples. I'm still using this second edition-- I've looked at the third edition and don't see much difference. Get the 2nd edition used (I paid $8 for it here) and save yourself about $70.

I read the reviews of David Hornung's book on color and one of the reviewers said that this book (Koenig's) was vastly superior. So I bought it. It's okay. But that's about it. The design of the book is very dated looking, classic textbook. The writing is tired and un-engaging and the samples are equally so. The problem is, the underlying ideas of color theory and use are pretty established, so finding a fresh way to present them takes a bit of effort. Hornung's book is exceptional at this task. Beautifully written, handsome in design and unique in its examples it is by far a better treatment of the subject.
And for illustrators and painters James Gurneys book "Color and Light for the Realist Painter" is magisterial.
Koenig's book will sit on my shelf and I'll take it down once in a while to check a reference, but it won't be in the rotation of books I recommend.

Maria Alonso Alonso holds a BA in English Philology and another BA in Hispanic Philology, both earned at the Universidade de Vigo. She is currently working towards her PhD, after having completed an MA in English Studies and an MA in Applied Linguistics. Jeannette Bello Mota is a PhD candidate at the Universidade de Vigo, Spain where she works as a researcher and teaching staff in the department of English, French and German Philology. She is currently researching towards her PhD thesis Ethnicity and Gender in Hip Hop Culture within the United States. Alba de Bejar Muinos is a predoctoral researcher at the Universidade de Vigo, where she has also worked as an adjunct teacher. Member of the research unit Feminario de Investigacion Feminismos e Resistencias, her research centers on the fields of Diaspora, Globalization, Citizenship, Gender and Transnational Studies as they pertain to the literary. After completing her MA in Advanced English Studies at the Universidade de Vigo, Laura Torrado Marinas is currently working as a researcher while she finishes her doctoral thesis on the Old English elegies.
