Multiple Intelligences: New Horizons in Theory and Practice, by Howard E. Gardner

Howard Gardner's brilliant conception of individual competence has changed the face of education in the twenty-three years since the publication of his classic work, Frames of Mind. Since then thousands of educators, parents, and researchers have explored the practical implications and applications of Multiple Intelligences theory--the powerfulnotion that there are separate human capacities, ranging from musical intelligence to the intelligence involved in self-understanding. The first decade of research on MI theory and practice was reported in the 1993 edition of Multiple Intelligences. This new edition covers all developments since then and stands as the most thorough and up-to-date account of MI available anywhere. Completely revised throughout, it features new material on global applications and on MI in the workplace, an assessment of MI practice in the current conservative educational climate, new evidence about brain functioning, and much more.

Hallmark of Multiple Intelligences Theory
By Navid Lashkarian
Gardner is a witty author with strikingly brilliant mind and admirable reverence toward the human divinity. In his book, Gardner manifests the notion of intelligence, as a bio-psychological potential, a computational capacity and a mental chemistry set and subsequently sheds lights on the commonly misconceived concept of intelligence as a one-dimensional human potential, characterized by the g or IQ metrics.

With his eloquent style, Gardner articulates the social, educational and psychological impacts of the multiple-intelligence theory rendering speculation on how intelligence shows its multifaceted attributes in various forms such as Mathematical-Logical, Kinesthetic, Musical, IntEr-personal, IntrA-personal, Linguistic, Spatial, Naturalistic and Existentialist abilities.

Upon reading the book, I found some interesting answers to my life-long inquiries regarding to the intelligence such as;

1. Why individuals with strong abilities in certain areas of mathematics, such as algebra or probability theory do not necessarily indicate strengths in other areas of mathematical sciences such as geometry or topology?

2. How the society can take advantage of the MI theory to bridge between the ethical values and individuals' capacities.

3. How a creative educator can achieve the "understanding" by exercising various avenues, such as foundational, quantitative, aesthetic, logical and existential methods to stir and incite the human intellect.

Gardner makes no effort to back up his hypothesis through psychometric experiments and I believe he has done this deliberately. More specifically, he believes any effort to benchmark the performances of individuals against these metrics would create a new version of human labeling, a concept that he certainly refrains to delve and investigate. Instead of putting effort in benchmarking these abilities in human minds, he believes efforts need to be made to identify, enhance and exercise the abilities that help the individuals to thrive in the areas that they have been blessed with, irrespective of society norms.

Chapter 1 of the book contains the highlights of his theory and covers various forms of intelligence. The introduction of the existential intelligence as a form of computational capacity is rather unpersuasive, knowing the fact that it is defined as an attribute (intelligence of big questions) and not as a mental ability. Favorite quote of this chapter;
"Having strong intelligence does not mean that one necessarily acts intelligently".

Chapter 2 of the book covers the semantics of the intelligence. An interesting topic in this chapter is the profile of the intelligence in which Gardner discusses how the intensity, diversity and locality of these potentials in an individual can result in spot-light or laser characteristics.

Chapter 3 provides a chronologic view of intelligence. Gardner tries to provide a simplified and standardized conception of the intelligence development across the life span of a human being. He also discusses the framework for the analysis and examination of the human intellect. This chapter is quite dry and lacks ardor. In my opinion, putting framework around something that has no boundary is rather counterintuitive.

Chapter 4 is the prelude of the educational impact of the intelligence. The very interesting topic in this section is the subject of "Multiple Representation of the Key Concepts". Resorting to the notion of multiple-intelligences, Gardner believes that there are numerous ways that an educator can approach a topic in pursuit of understanding. This methodology also helps students to think about a problem in a variety of ways, triggering the thought process in the most diverse form.

Chapter 5 is a pool of questions that individuals have asked Gardner regarding to his theories. Of special interest in this section is the topic of memory and its different faculties such as procedural memory, propositional memory, semantic memory, short and long-term memories. I believe this topic deserved more elaboration, or at minimum more references.
Favorite quote from this chapter:
"I often encounter the greatest resistance to this perspective when I speak to mathematicians or logicians. To these individuals, thinking is critical thinking, wherever you encounter it; if one knows how to be logical, one should be able to apply logic everywhere (And if you don't, life is hopeless !)".

Chapters 6 to 10 have heavy weights toward education. Of special interest is the chapter 8 and the topic on multiple entry point toward disciplinary understanding.
Gardner discusses how an informed educator can use various entry points, such as narrational, logical, quantitative, foundational, aesthetic, experimental and collaborative methods in approaching the topic. The examples given in this section are extremely valuable for all educators.

As you progress toward the end chapters, the modality of manuscript transitions toward ethics. To some extent, the progression of the thought process in this book is analogous to Gardner's perspective toward the subject; in his early life his motivation toward intelligence was mainly driven and influenced by cognitive sciences and psychometric studies, whereas his recent research and interest have roots in social impacts, ethics and humanity.

In summary, this book is an instant classic on the topic of multiple-intelligences, a must have book for the fireside at home.

Gardner Returns to Multiple Intelligences Theory
By Kevin Currie-Knight
It was in 1983 that Howard Gardner first decided to challenge the established view of a monolithic intelligence with the book Frames of Mind. In that book, Gardner posited that there are (at least) seven relatively seperate and autonomous intelligences. And 25 years later, this theory is still setting the education world ablaze.

The discipline of psychology, however, has been a bit less enthusiastic. They, much more than educators, demand hard evidence in order for a theory claiming to be scientific is accepted as such. Is Garnder's theory testable? If so, has it undergone such testing? Can these intelligences (including 'musical' and 'naturalistic') be measured by objective standards? If not, is it an adequate substitute to the reigning model of 'general intelligence' which, with all its flaws, IS measurable in such a way?

In this book, Gardner sets out to expand upon his 25 year old theory and, in so doing, answer some of the preceeding questions. Some will be disappointed and some will be encouraged by his answers.

The first section of the book devotes itself largely to questions of MI Theory's methodological standing.

Several chapters - particularly towards the beginning of the book - seek to answer objections to MI theory. As to the question of whether the theory can be called scientific, Gardner reluctantly answers a "no." He writes MI theory "intermediary status" between a philosophy and a predictive science. He suggests, though, that it can be put in a similar category with plate tectonics and evolution, in the sense that neither theory is a predictive sceince in a falsifiable sense (which is mistaken, as both are tested by retrodictions and, in evolution's case, also by predictions). Further, Gardner admits that designing assessments for these intelligences has proved to be more than challenging and that he has given up the search for ways to assess them.

There is, though, a chapter devoted to detailing a promising new study put together by Project Spectrum, to test elementary schoolers on these seperate intelligences. They were tested (a) to see if the intelligences are interrelated or autonomous by investigating whether high scores in any one area correlate with high scores in any other. The reports are that the intelligences are, by in large, seperate - as Gardner predicted they would be. They also tested to see whether the student's strengths on the tests were echoed by parent and teacher reports gotten independently. (There was correlation, but not so much as to be conclusive).

The section that will be most useful to my fellow educators, however, will be the second section. For roughly 80 pages, Gardner expounds on his theory and its possible uses in the field of education.

Gardner is quite famous for his 'value free' stance here. He suggests that there are many, many uses for MI theory in education. He tries both in this book and elsewuere to refrain from too much prescription, acknowledging that educators probably know better than he how to apply the work of a cognitive psychologist to schools.

However, he is passionate about two things educationally in this book. First, he is very displeased at the 'high stakes testing' mentality that has been developed of late. Like the concept of 'general intelligence,' Gardner sees this as being a very 'one-size-fits-all' way of assessing, and probably mis-assessing, knowledge.

Gardner is also very passionate about making sure that we see the 'ends' of schooling as pluralistic. Consistent with the idea of Multiple Intelligences, we must strike a balance between making sure that everyone recieve a common education and making sure that everyone is able to pursue their own strengths, interests, and proclivities to the extent possible.

It is hard to disagree with much that Gardner says, particularly in this and the next section (where he takes a look at MI theory's applicability betyond education). Even as one who is a bit skeptical of whether MI theory can ever be a scientific one (and whether there might be bettter models of Intelligence, like that of Robert Sternberg), it is difficult not to come away with much admiration for Gardner. He obviously cares about education and comes to his conclusions out of balanced and rigorous thought.

This should be read by educators and those interested in the psychology of intelligence alike.

Dry reading
By Amy M. Earls
While Howard Gardner has a wonderful theory with multiple intelligences (MI) that makes more sense than anything we've ever been taught about education, the reading is really dry. That being said, he does say that he is first and foremost a psychologist, and his writings are written for fellow psychologists. The theory is good as long as you can get through the monotone in which he writes. A much better choice would be Ken Robinson's "The Element." He expands upon the MI theory in much easier to understand terms.

In this book, we will be discussing an ancient Jewish prayer, often called the " The Kabbalists Prayer" and the "Genesis Prayer" called in Hebrew " Ana Bekoach" . This powerful prayer on the surface seems like a standard prayer, nothing particularly remarkable is contained within the verses. To most, it is just another prayer, but to those who look, they will find within the text the 42 letter name of God. This name of God is so powerful that just by reciting it and gazing upon the letters, you can gain immense powers from the divine. Powers that can solve all your problems. I know it sounds too good to be true, but this prayer and the 42 letter name of God within its verses has been proven to be very powerful. If you look it up you will find countless testaments to the power of this name.

An excellent and very much needed work
By William Courson
Sebastian Pole is a British practitioner of ayurveda, traditional Chinese and Western herbal medicine as well as a professional teacher of yoga and is a pioneer in the cultivation of organic ayurvedic herbs in the UK, and has had extensive clinical training in ayurvedic clinics and hospitals in India. He has presented the health care community and the ayurvedic profession with what surely will become the definitive textbook of ayurvedic herbal medicine for aspiring practitioners and manual for clinicians in the Western and English-speaking world.

This book has filled a desperate and long-felt need for an English-language work that is at a sufficient level of clinical detail for working and student practitioners of ayurveda. It is replete with color photographs, superbly well-organized details on each herb catalogued, and very well written. I refer to it daily in both my practice and my teaching.

"Ayurvedic Medicine: The Principles of Traditional Practice" provides a deep and broad understanding of the theory underlying ayurvedic pharmacology and therapeutics along with a practical materia medica of over 80 ayurvedic plant remedies, each carefully denoted by its common Indian name, Sanskrit and Latin name, description, color photographs of the herb in both its prepared and fresh forms, energetics, phytoconstitutents, ayurvedic and biomedical actions, indications, contraindications, safety issues, formulations and dosage, along with additional notes.

The work is divided into three main sections. Part 1 presents a history of ayurveda and the development of its materia medica; basic principles (the panch mahabhutas, the three doshas, the saptadhatus, the srota, ayurvedic anatomy, disease etiology and pathology); principles of ayurvedic herbal pharmacology and pharmacy; ayurvedic diagnosis and therapeutics, treatment protocols and the scientific basis for ayurveda's claims. Part 2 presents the plant profiles, herb sourcing, and traditional formulas, and Part 3 contains useful tabular appendices, a glossary, herbal sources, plant name indices, and transliteration and pronunciation notes.

Everyone involved in ayurveda, and in a larger sense everyone involved in or interested in health care, complimentary medicine or herbalism, owes Mr. Pole a huge debt of gratitude for this excellent and very much needed work.

one of the top 5 must-have books for Ayurvedic practitioners
By Claudia Welch
If an Ayurvedic practitioner were to be stranded on a desert island and could only bring 5 Ayurveda books w/ them, I would say this should be one of them. While practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) have been lucky enough to have Bensky's Materia Medica, until Pole's book, Ayurvedic practitioners have had no clear, well-organized reference material for herbal knowledge. Not only does Pole present mature theory, he writes with the benefit of having been a practitioner, and the information reflects his clinical experience. I'm grateful to have it in my library.

Absolutely amazing!
By Nico
This book has finally filled the space between Dravyaguna and Yoga of Herbs. It is totally comprehensive with color pictures, superb detail of each herb, and very well organized. We are already referring to it every single day. This book is a must-have for anyone using herbs in the practice of Ayurveda.

Review
[Review of previous edition:] What sets this book apart is that Amrein-Boyes is a professional cheesemaker. She's the genius behind The Farm House Natural Cheeses, one of British Columbia's most outstanding artisan cheesemakers. This is important information to know, because it tells you that the author knows what she's talking about...the recipes are written from a cheesemaker's perspective rather than a chef's or home cook's perspective... Helpful troubleshooting tips something I've not seen before in a home cheesemaking book will aid in the diagnosis of problems as they come up...This is one of the best cheesemaking books I've come across. Amrein-Boyes conveys the complexity and rigor of the practice of cheesemaking, while at the same time making the craft accessible to the masses. (Pacific Northwest Cheese Project blog 2009-06-16)

Introduction

"A BOOK OF VERSES underneath the Bough, a Jug of Wine, a Loaf of Bread -- and Thou.... " This well known quote comes from one of the most famous romantics of all time, but what is missing from this picnic in paradise? The cheese, of course! While not mentioned in the poem, it is quite possible that cheese was on the menu that day. When Omar Khayym penned these words more than 800 years ago, cheese was already a staple food.

Though the origin of cheese, like that of so many things in human history, is shrouded in mystery, it is safe to say that people of many cultures and traditions found ways early on to preserve the bounty and goodness of fresh milk, whether from cow, sheep, goat or camel, in this form. However it came to be, cheese is a valuable food: packed with important nutrients and a vital staple in the diets of most cultures.

In traditional agriculture, cheese making was a way of preserving the summer's milk surplus for consumption in the leaner winter season, when the animals were awaiting the arrival of their young in the spring. Domesticated milk-producing animals have a period during which they are "dry," or not lactating, while their bodies store energy for the birth of their young. Since this phase can last from a few weeks up to several months, depending on the breed of animal, it was important to be prepared for that interval of no milk production. In the summer months, the farmer's wife would often become a cheese maker, filling the cellar with enough cheese for the family's own needs and producing a bit extra to sell at the market to supplement the farm income in the winter.

The making of cheese on the farm was, and to some extent still is, an important part of many Old World cultures, but it was not continued to the same degree in the New World. However, things are changing. In the last 20 years or so, there has been a rediscovery of farmstead, or artisanal, cheese making, thanks to consumers who are actively seeking a more local, natural diet as an alternative to an increasingly industrialized and globalized food industry.

My personal story of cheese making began in 1978 with a trip to the Swiss Alps. I was attending a wedding, and the bride's parents invited me to spend several days with them at their holiday chalet in the mountains. While there, we visited a Senn, or Alpine herdsman, who was in charge of the farmers' cows on the summer pasture. I remember the copper cauldron hanging over the wood fire in a low-ceilinged hut and the fresh cheeses draining on the boards along the walls. Right on the other side of the stone wall were the cows, back in their stalls for the evening milking after a day of grazing the Alpine meadows. After I returned to Canada, I tried my hand at cheese making, but my information was sketchy and I failed dismally. The long-suffering barn cats finished off what was left of my inedible cheese, and I shelved the idea. But destiny had other plans for me: several years later I returned to the Swiss Alps to live and raise a family, and there began again to learn the satisfying art of cheese making.

This book will help you discover a bit of this cheese-making heritage for yourself, at home in your own kitchen. Some of the recipes are time-tested ones that your great-grandmother could very likely have made in her farm kitchen, while others have been collected from around the world. There are also some new ideas to try, with unusual ingredients. We will cover everything from simple fresh cheeses and related dairy products (such as butter, crme frache and ricotta) to traditional hard cheeses (such as Cheddar, Gruyere and Parmesan) to special ethnic cheeses.

I hope you enjoy the process, but most of all the result. There's nothing like a fresh pizza on which even the mozzarella is made from scratch. Be sure to take some along on that perfect picnic!

A note on Appellation d'origine contrle (AOC) and Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) cheeses: like fine wines, many cheeses are traditional to certain areas of the world and are made according to clearly outlined specifications to maintain their authenticity. In this book, we will be speaking of cheeses made in the style of many of these specialty cheeses.

A Must-have for the Home-Cheesemaker
By Kelley Wilkinson
I almost didn't purchase the book because of the title, thinking it was for beginners only, or that it might only contain kitchen recipes using cheese as an ingredient. However, this book is the real deal. As those of us who already make cheese know, cheesemaking IS fairly easy on the whole, thus the title. I think she was trying to remove some of the mystique of this ancient art, but if I had been her PR person, I would have insisted on a more worldly, much-deserved title acclaiming her incredible book. As a home cheesemaker striving for artisanal quality, I was wowed by her excellent recipes, (there really are a lot of hard-to find cheese recipes for those seeking to make lesser-know European style cheeses) , suggestions, information (ever spend days on a search engine trying to find out just how farmstead cheeses get those amazing rinds? You will now know! ), and yes, as a bonus, even some lovely meal-planning recipes to use up all this fabulous gourmet cheese you will be making. But cooking with cheese is not what the book is about. It is about making your own cheese from milk. Cheesemaking has been shrouded in secrecy, and has almost become a lost art in much of the world. It is a wonderful hobby, fairly easy, filled with benefits, and, up until now, filled with frustration in finding much advanced information. It is a real delight to find one source with so much information. The author is amazingly generous with her knowledge. She covers a lot of territory, with many pages for troubleshooting, and lots of helpful tips scattered throughout the book. The recipe list for how to make various cheeses is extensive, and covered here, more or less (Please forgive my typos):

Quark, Fromage Frais, Fromage Blanc, Cream Cheese, French Cream Cheese, Greek Island Mizithra, Shepherd's Mizithra, Vangelis' Sour Mizithra, Alpine Ziger, Traditional Ricotta, Sweet Ricotta, Chevre, Traditional Provencal Chevre, Brousse, Sheep's milk Brousse, Cottage Cheese, English Farmhouse Cheese, Fresh Goat cheeses, Mascarpone, and both Cow's and Goat's milk Faiselle,

Several versions of Mozzarella, plus Mozzarella di Bufala, Bocconcini, Provolone, Caciocavallo, Scamorza, Asadero, Kasseri, Saganaki,

Yogurt, Yogurt with skim-milk powder, Greek-style yogurt, Goat's milk yogurt with gelatin, Bulgarian-style yogurt, Yogurt cheese, Lebanese yogurt cheese, Labneh cheese balls, Kefir, Kefir grains, Kefir cheese,

Butter, Bacterially-ripened cream butter, Naturally ripened cream butter, Sweet cream butter,Ssalted butter, 19 different flavored Butters (such as morel mushroom butter, cranberry orange butter, etc!), Ghee, Cultured buttermilk, Buttermilk cheese, Buttermilk hand cheese, Sour cream, Creme fraiche, and Clotted cream!

This is simply the best hands-on manual for cheese-makers to come along in a long time! If I could only buy one book on cheesemaking, I would insist on two -this book and 'The Cheesemaker's Manual' by Margaret Morris. Even if you are a beginner you might quickly outgrow some of the other titles. This will last you through a lifetime of cheesemaking. I have made at least a dozen, and counting, of the more advanced recipes and found all of them to be excellent. Highly recommended!

Can't believe I made this cheese!
By Cheese Lover
I just finished my first attempt at making cheese from this book, and it was a complete and total success. I made the Ste. Maure and the Valenay goat cheeses. I was amazed that they turned out so differently since they started out with exactly the same curds, but the results were perfectly beautiful and delicious. I'm now trying to decide which cheese to try next, but I have total confidence that they will be equally as perfect. I have several other cheese making books, but I have found this one to be the most comprehensive, and now I also know it to be trustworthy in its recipes.

Excellent explanations!
By Susan Siemers
I have several cheese making books and didn't think I needed any more. A friend bought this book and lent it to me, even though I told her I had all the cheese books I needed. Then I started reading. I must disagree with the reviewer who didn't think this book was for beginners - I think it most certainly is. There are clear and detailed explanations and illustrations in pages 9 through 39. I've been making cheese for years, but had many "aha!" moments while reading through those pages. I immediately ordered my own copy.

Buy this book, and before you make your first cheese read these pages. Then you will understand what you are doing and why you are doing it from the beginning. I'm sure it will prevent a few spoiled batches of cheese. I wish I had had this book five years ago! It is well worth the investment, even for experienced cheese makers.

One aside - her cottage cheese recipe uses rennet and is quick to make, but I much prefer cottage cheese made without rennet. Without rennet, it has to sit for 24 hours to ripen and form curd, but it makes a more tender cheese, in my opinion. Don't let that stop you from getting this book. It has become my "go to" cheese book and it will be yours as well.

The American Dream: A Cultural History, by Lawrence R. Samuel

There is no better way to understand America than by understanding the cultural history of the American Dream. Rather than just a powerful philosophy or ideology, the Dream is thoroughly woven into the fabric of everyday life, playing a vital role in who we are, what we do, and why we do it. No other idea or mythology has as much influence on our individual and collective lives. Tracing the history of the phrase in popular culture, Samuel gives readers a field guide to the evolution of our national identity over the last eighty years.

Samuel tells the story chronologically, revealing that there have been six major eras of the mythology since the phrase was coined in 1931. Relying mainly on period magazines and newspapers as his primary source material, the author demonstrates that journalists serving on the front lines of the scene represent our most valuable resource to recover unfiltered stories of the Dream. The problem, Samuel reveals, is that it does not exist; the Dream is just that, a product of our imagination. That it is not real ultimately turns out to be the most significant finding and what makes the story most compelling.

The book is published by Syracuse University Press.

Wake Up, It's Just a Dream
By takingadayoff
The American Dream is older than America. Even the first settlers from Europe had an American dream - to be free of the oppression they were experiencing at home. But the phrase only became widely used in the 1930s. Then it quickly became a phrase that refused to sit still and be pinned down. Everyone has a different definition of the Dream.

Historian Lawrence Samuel surveys the use of the phrase from the Great Depression to the 21st century and finds it "(m)utable and amorphous, . . the Zelig of mythologies, able to transform itself to fit virtually any situation or cause." It's whatever we want it to be, but like any dream, not quite real.

Samuel examines an entertaining variety of uses of the phrase, but the one that gets to the heart of the American Dream has to be that of Horatio Alger. Alger's stories for boys were wildly popular in the late 19th century and the early 20th century, stories of poor boys who became wealthy through hard work and ingenuity. He wrote over a hundred books and, Samuel says, made a fortune, squandered it, and died penniless. But his fictions trumped the reality of his life, and Samuel finds it "ironic that [Alger's] name would be forever equated with the American Dream of success."

Samuel follows the phrase decade by decade, in movies, TV, advertising, and politics, and finds that every generation experiences a national setback that makes it question the Dream. New immigrants come with their own interpretations of the Dream. And through it all, the politicians and advertisers twist the Dream to suit their own purposes.

Whether we understand the American Dream to be financial security for working hard and playing by the rules, or perhaps spectacular fame and fortune via lottery or reality show, it's a dream apparently almost impossible to attain. Almost without fail, when Americans of any income level are asked how much income they think will make them feel satisfied and secure, it's always about half again what they earn. Non-monetary interpretations of the Dream are just as elusive - an America without poverty or racism or crime. The American Dream is a slippery devil.

Concise if somewhat prosaic study on The American Dream
By BLehner
How would you define The American Dream? Limitless possibilities? The good life? Pursuit of happiness? In The American Dream Lawrence R. Samuel explores this constant presence in the minds of the American people as the one thing defining their culture.
From the beginnings of the Dream during the Great Depression to the times of counterculture in the 1960s straight to the present the author highlights the origins of the Dream, how it evolved over the years, and its relevance today. Of course I've heard about The American Dream before though I admittedly didn't know all that much about this integral part of what shaped the American identity. Mostly compiled through journalistic records the book offers a fascinating, in-depth read for anyone interested in the topic. What I personally enjoyed the most were the excursions into pop culture, showing how The American Dream reflects in both literature and on the big screen. I also like how the author ponders whether there is such a thing as an European or even a Global Dream. Overall I found this book to be a great illumination of the topic, yet I must admit that I found it to be a bit on the dry side too.
Will The American Dream be still there tomorrow? Is it really, as the author suggests, only a myth, existent in our imagination? A doubtlessly thought-provoking conclusion which everyone should answer for themselves.
In short: Concise if somewhat prosaic study on The American Dream!

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the NetGalley book review program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Everything under the same label
By Mara
The book is interesting, I recommend it. Though the reader should bear in mind that many aspects that are here labelled as being part of the American Dream, are not. Those other aspects are not truly American, and they are not a dream, they are civil rights gained by mankind since the French Revolution and the Declaration of Human Rights and Rights of Workers. So, be careful when you read because not every wish or desire for something better is the American Dream. Many of those longings belong to the field of civil rights and Welfare State. The aspect that belongs truly to the American Dream concept is that of immigration and the thought that you could go to America, start from scratch and become successful. That is American Dream 100%. But to have trade unions, minimum salary guaranteed, access to public health, access to public education, equal pay for equal work, freedom of religion, human rights, are not part of the American Dream. Those are part of Welfare State and you do not need to go to America to find them. Moreover, those are not a 'dream' but a 'right'. Good book all in all!

Humans Need Not Apply: A Guide to Wealth and Work in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, by Jerry Kaplan

An insightful, engaging tour by a noted Silicon Valley insider of how accelerating developments in Artificial Intelligence will transform the way we live and work

Selected as one of the 10 best science and technology books of 2015 by The Economist

After billions of dollars and fifty years of effort, researchers are finally cracking the code on artificial intelligence. As society stands on the cusp of unprecedented change, Jerry Kaplan unpacks the latest advances in robotics, machine learning, and perception powering systems that rival or exceed human capabilities. Driverless cars, robotic helpers, and intelligent agents that promote our interests have the potential to usher in a new age of affluence and leisure — but as Kaplan warns, the transition may be protracted and brutal unless we address the two great scourges of the modern developed world: volatile labor markets and income inequality. He proposes innovative, free-market adjustments to our economic system and social policies to avoid an extended period of social turmoil. His timely and accessible analysis of the promise and perils of artificial intelligence is a must-read for business leaders and policy makers on both sides of the aisle.

Jared Diamond of the future
By janet belsky
Jerry Kaplan does for the future what Jared Diamond did for the past: He pulls together our human (or humanoid) fate in sparkling, often hilarious, prose.

Kaplan begins by offering the non scientific reader (me) a clear overview of the AI advances that are poised to make human workers obsolete--offering eye popping examples explaining how the pace of technology is destined to overwhelm the human landscape of life and work.

He then charts the changes that span FAR more than driverless cars. Mechanical robots (or what Kaplan calls "forged intelligences") will be more adept (and. of course, far more cost effective) than humans at performing every routine job from collecting our garbage to stocking our grocery shelves (and make those physical stores quaint relics of the past). "Synthetic intelligences" (machines that think and analyze information) will outwit humans at making complex diagnoses or writing legal briefs--automating out many of the hapless law school or medical students spending decades accumulating those mountainous student debts .

So far readers may be saying " I know all that stuff". Actually, you don't. The real gem of this book is that Kaplan CALCULATES how many people enter the workforce with those mountains of debt and compares their expected salaries. He analyzes the current employment situation for new law school grads and other "knowledge workers". He offers a wealth of data documenting how many jobs are going to be lost... beginning with that prime exemplar (AKA job wrecker), Amazon. I always wanted to know how Amazon evolved, the truth about this behemoth's business model, and how many jobs Amazon has automated out... In this book you will actually get these statistics and much more, as well as learning exactly why those standard government "job growth projection" stats are apt to be totally wrong.

In other words, as you read in these other reviews , this book is all about income inequalities and what we can do to in Kaplan's words to slow the transition to making "America the Land of the Pharaohs" ( You ain't seen nothing yet). In fact the chapter--of this title- describing the lifestyles of Kaplan and his much richer colleagues versus one of his hardworking employees is the best in- the- flesh description of income inequalities I've read.

Kaplan has the huge advantage of personally knowing these billionaire Silicon Valley movers and shakers--in addition to having a birds eye seat on how these technologies evolved. But, most important, he has a gift for bringing it all home through creative analogies and zinger-like sentences that had me rolling on the floor. So if you like Jared Diamond, or even if you don't know who he is, you will LOVE this landmark book.

P.S. I've omitted the fact that Kaplan also suggests answers.. that is, he devises highly innovative policy suggestions to make playing field less steep that come closer to attacking the roots of the problem and go well beyond the current mantras such as increasing access to college or raising the minimum wage......

Robots: from ABS brakes to world domination
By John Swift
The first sixty percent of the book seems first rate and adds much new information based on the author's personal experience.

The weakest sections are when he discusses solutions to the inequality problems generated by advancing technology and wealth. Humans beings will be unevenly hindered by failing or outdated abilities and by the inadequate education of the working young.

His solutions to the inequality such as restructuring the tax code and the social security system seem well intentioned but entirely inadequate.

The book is certainly a worthwhile read and I give the author full credit for the effort. The best thing is probably that he describes the likely path of AI in a realistic way as it proceeds from ABS braking in cars to world domination.

This should be on everyone's "must read" lists...
By TBC
Pro's: Terrific content. I thought it was not only very interesting, but a prediction of the likely outcomes in the AI market. Excellent research and deep background into the inner workings of some of the problems that are occurring in our financial markets. The detailed undoing of the IBM objection killer - "computers can only do what you program them to do" - was a huge contribution. It's the equivalent of overturning "the earth is flat" assumption. The background on how HFT happened also had some great insider knowledge, and I never understood the impact before I heard it explained by Kaplan.

Con's: The audio tape was a little 'stilted' in its selection of words. That tended to distract from the message in a couple of areas. As the content was terrific, I didn't see the need to 'blur' the message by using difficult and less than common word choices. Personally, I think that should have been called out by whomever reviewed the audio book. In my opinion, less stilted academician wording would have made this an even bigger seller.

This should be on everyone's "must read" lists...
