Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain, by Maryanne Wolf

The act of reading is a miracle. Every new reader's brain possesses the extraordinary capacity to rearrange itself beyond its original abilities in order to understand written symbols. But how does the brain learn to read? As world-renowned cognitive neuroscientist and scholar of reading Maryanne Wolf explains in this impassioned book, we taught our brain to read only a few thousand years ago, and in the process changed the intellectual evolution of our species.

Wolf tells us that the brain that examined tiny clay tablets in the cuneiform script of the Sumerians is configured differently from the brain that reads alphabets or of one literate in today's technology.

There are critical implications to such an evolving brain. Just as writing reduced the need for memory, the proliferation of information and the particular requirements of digital culture may short-circuit some of written language's unique contributions--with potentially profound consequences for our future.

Turning her attention to the development of the individual reading brain, Wolf draws on her expertise in dyslexia to investigate what happens when the brain finds it difficult to read. Interweaving her vast knowledge of neuroscience, psychology, literature, and linguistics, Wolf takes the reader from the brains of a pre-literate Homer to a literacy-ambivalent Plato, from an infant listening to Goodnight Moon to an expert reader of Proust, and finally to an often misunderstood child with dyslexia whose gifts may be as real as the challenges he or she faces.

As we come to appreciate how the evolution and development of reading have changed the very arrangement of our brain and our intellectual life, we begin to realize with ever greater comprehension that we truly are what we read. Ambitious, provocative, and rich with examples, Proust and the Squid celebrates reading, one of the single most remarkable inventions in history. Once embarked on this magnificent story of the reading brain, you will never again take for granted your ability to absorb the written word.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Wolf, a professor of child development at Tufts University, integrates psychology and archaeology, linguistics and education, history and neuroscience in a truly path-breaking look at the development of the reading brain-a complicated phenomenon that Wolf seeks to chronicle from both the early history of humanity and the early stages of an individual's development ("unlike its component parts such as vision and speech... reading has no direct genetic program passing it on to future generations"). Along the way, Wolf introduces concepts like "word poverty," the situation in which children, by age five, have heard 32 million less words than their counterparts (with chilling long-term effects), and makes time for amusing and affecting anecdotes, like the only child she knew to fake a reading disorder (attempting to get back into his beloved literacy training program). Though it could probably command a book of its own, the sizable third section of the book covers the complex topic of dyslexia, explaining clearly and expertly "what happens when the brain can't learn to read." One of those rare books that synthesizes cutting edge, interdisciplinary research with the inviting tone of a curious, erudite friend (think Malcolm Gladwell), Wolf's first book for a general audience is an eye-opening winner, and deserves a wide readership.

From the Back Cover
“Human beings were never born to read,” writes Tufts University cognitive neuroscientist and child development expert Maryanne Wolf. Reading is a human invention that reflects how the brain rearranges itself to learn something new. In this ambitious, provocative book, Wolf chronicles the remarkable journey of the reading brain not only over the past five thousand years, since writing began, but also over the course of a single child’s life, showing in the process why children with dyslexia have reading difficulties and singular gifts.

Lively, erudite, and rich with examples, Proust and the Squid asserts that the brain that examined the tiny clay tablets of the Sumerians was a very different brain from the one this is immersed in today’s technology-driven literacy. The potential transformations in this changed reading brain, Wolf argues, have profound implications for every child and for the intellectual development of our species.

Richly informative...
By John P. Jones III
Maryanne Wolf has written a richly informative work, which covered a number of areas that I had very limited knowledge of. She is an academic who has made numerous complex subjects and concepts accessible to the non-specialist, yet has not trivialized the material. She never explains when and how she had the inspiration for a very memorable title, which would nag with the question: What could Marcel Proust and a Squid possibly have in common? Ah, like so much in the book, and in real life, it is the connections that our neuro-pathways make.

The author has covered three principal topics. As she explains in the first chapter: "This book consists of three areas of knowledge: the early history of how our species learned to read, from the time of the Sumerians to Socrates; the developmental life cycle of humans as they learn to read in ever more sophisticated ways over time; and the story and science of what happens when the brain can't learn to read."

Admittedly, rather late in life, I finally read The Odyssey. The version was a new one by Barry B. Powell. In his introduction, he posits the theory that the Greek alphabet was invented around 800 B.C., in order to record the poetic rhythm of Homer's epic tale. Thus I was particularly attentive to Wolf's account of how writing systems evolved, starting with the "bird tracks," of the Sumerians through the Akkadians (a language I have only recently become aware of - apparently there are a few hundred people in the world still trying to keep the language alive) and on to the hieroglyphics of the Egyptians. Each of these languages contained a pictorial element. It was only when the Greeks invented their language, which was largely and directly related to the phonetics of the language, that a true alphabet was established.

In human evolution the ability to read has developed only recently. Wolf makes the point that we are not "hard-wired" to read. For each of us, we must learn - sometimes painfully, and with limited success - to develop those neurological pathways that make sense of the small, repetitive shapes on a piece of paper - or now, increasingly, on a digital screen. I found this section fascinating too. For example, she cites the work of three Chinese neurologists in the 1930's who studied the case of a bi-lingual businessman who had a severe stroke. He had completely lost his ability to read Chinese, but could still read English. It required completely different sections of the brain to read a more pictorial based alphabet as opposed to the limited characters in the alphabet used to write English.

Another section that strongly resonated concerned re-reading books at different periods in one's life, deriving different meanings depending on the evolving experiences in one's own life. Wolf specifically mentioned George Eliot's Middlemarch (Penguin Classics) which she had read several times, which was precisely the theme of Rebecca Mead's recently published My Life in Middlemarch. I too have been re-reading a number of works first read 30-40 years ago, finding new meaning, and re-assessing.

The last third of the book dealt with those who have difficulties reading, and are often labeled dyslexic, a term that Wolf says has no real meaning. She does cover the number of areas in which individuals may have deficiencies in their ability to read fluently. These deficiencies can be unique, or overlapping. And it seems that the brains of these individuals are simply different, with more equality between the left and right hemispheres. And "dyslexics" seem to be more creative. She names numerous historical individuals who appear to have had that problem, and whose names are definitely remembered today, like Einstein. She also reveals it is a personal issue, since her son has had reading problems.

I did have some problems with this book. First and foremost, Wolf repeatedly makes the point that Socrates was opposed to the transition from the oral to written medium for conveying knowledge, and attempts to connect that to the transition from knowledge obtained through books to that obtained from the Internet. But she never really develops this theme; she just raises it repeatedly. I felt particular unease - though I admit doing it myself, in deciding a book of Diane Arbus' photographs was not suitable viewing material for my once-upon-a-time seven year old daughter - to Wolf's theme that access to knowledge should be "guided." That concept is right out of the playbook of many a totalitarian state... or, increasingly, wantabees. Who does the "guiding" and with what criteria was another topic she did not address. I also felt she succumbed to a congenital weakness of academics: "plugging" the work of colleagues for no particular purpose, other than, the "plug."

Finally, and it is a particular concern of mine. With all the effort that is expended on learning how to read - to obtain that "eureka" moment that Wolf beautifully described in one case, why do so very few people continue to read serious works once the school assignments are finished? Also, unaddressed. Overall, for Wolf's work, a very informative 4-star rating.

Difficult to Read
By Ohioan
I think the information in this book is very important, especially the author's main point, that reading changes the brain. However, even though I'm an avid reader of all kinds of books, from graphic novels to scientific nonfiction, from picture books to adult novels, I found this book in particular difficult to read. The sentences are long and convoluted, filled with scientific terms that aren't really explained to a lay reader. From the way it has been advertised and reviewed, this book APPEARS to be aimed at the lay reader: somebody who is interested in reading and reading comprehension. However, the way the book is written, it seems addressed only to academics and perhaps people in law -- those who spend their days reading long, complex sentences that vary little in style or tone.

I liked the content of this book so much that I'd really like to give the book four stars, but I just can't, because, ironically, this book on reading and reading comprehension does not seem to take into consideration what makes a reading experience pleasurable. I maintain that even factual information can be presented in an accurate and well-written way that makes reading it a pleasure. Plus, there is no humor at all in this book. Very dry.

Highly technical, but reads like a story
By Beholden
I found out about this book from an article in the Boston Globe. I am such a voracious reader that I would read the back of the cereal box if I had nothing else before me while eating breakfast. I have always been fascinated by the fixation that reading holds on me. As a physician (pediatric surgeon,) father, and grandfather, I wanted to learn more about how to impart the reading habit upon my family and other children in my sphere of influence. This book is satisfying to someone with a strong science background, but I think it would appeal to anyone who has an interest in the wonder of reading and language facility - the greatest treasure of humankind, in my estimation.

A Treasure in the Clutter (in my opinion)
By Quu
It has both the Imprimatur and Nihil Obstat. The information in here feels un-opinionated and accurate. The book is like a history textbook used in a public school except it is about church history. The book's author is a Catholic priest.

The best Catholic textbook available
By Christina Martin
To say "the best" may sound like an exaggeration, but I don't think it is, in this case. I've homeschooled for 12 years, and I've seen a lot of Catholic educational materials in that time... some good, some bad. This excels them all. One of the most difficult things for a Catholic who is homeschooling a high-schooler is finding age appropriate materials that are written in sufficient depth and at a college preparatory level. So many of them are written either in simplistic language, or for the adult learner who has more specific, non-academic needs. This book is a must-have for anyone who is educating highly intelligent teenagers, or for the motivated Catholic adult.

Billions and Billions: Thoughts on Life and Death at the Brink of the Millennium, by Carl Sagan

* This is a used book in great condiditon! The jacket is missing but there are no other signs of wear. In this book, his last, Carl Sagan shows once again his extraordinary ability to interpret the mysteries of life and the majesty of the universe for the general reader. Brilliant, eloquent, and imbued with Sagan's uniquely childlike sense of awe, this entertaining collection of essays captures the authors spirit at its best.

In Billions and Billions Sagan applies what we know about science, mathematics, and space to everyday life, as well as to the exploration of many essential questions concerning the environment and our future. Ranging far and wide in subject matter, he takes his readers on a soaring journey, from the invention of chess to the possibility of life on Mars, from Monday Night Football to the relationship between the United States and Russia, from global warming to the abortion debate. And, on a more intimate note, we are given a rare glimpse of the author himself as he movingly describes his valiant fight for his life, his love of his family, and his personal beliefs about death and God.

Throughout these essays, Sagan provides clarity and understanding for an audience eager to make sense of the world around it as it prepares for the challenges of the coming millennium, and in the process he illuminates his strongly held belief that we have the ability to change the world and our lives for the better.

Sagan has said, We make our world significant by the courage of our questions and by the depth of our answers. With this book, as in his magnificent career, he makes this world significant indeed.

From Library Journal
It is doubtful that there is anyone unfamiliar with noted astronomer and science writer Sagan's ability to convey the wonder, excitement, and joy of science. This book is a wonderful, if eclectic, collection of essays, some reprinted from magazines of national prominence, covering a wide range of topics: the invention of chess, life on Mars, global warming, abortion, international affairs, the nature of government, and the meaning of morality. Writing with clarity and an understanding of human nature, Sagan offers hope for humanity's future as he illuminates our ability to understand ourselves and to change the world for the better. The last chapter is an account of his struggle with myelodysplasia, the illness that finally took his life in December 1996. An epilog written by his wife is a personal account of the man rather than the scientist admired by so many. This last book is a fitting capstone to a distinguished career. Enthusiastically recommended.

From Booklist
Carl Sagan died last December, and as a result, these essays exude a feeling of interrupted eloquence. The celebrity planetary astronomer possibly had more books to write that could have compared favorably with his Cosmos (1980) or Pale Blue Dot (1994), but disappointingly, this collection does not bloom like those dependable library perennials. Perhaps expectations are overly inflated with a new Sagan exposition in hand--but here, expectations rapidly deflate upon seeing that the contents comprise much reprinted material, such as nonscience articles he and his wife and coauthor, Ann Druyan, wrote for a Sunday newspaper supplement. One Parade piece, advancing their argument in favor of legal abortion, sourly criticizes televangelist Pat Robertson for using his influence to mobilize opposition to the 1990 article, a point that skates over the sway the authors themselves were trying to exert in the abortion controversy by means of their article. In other chapters, the subjects are flat--an explanation of the origin of Sagan's brand-name cliche"billions and billions" --or the subjects are rudimentary. Blemishes apart, this collection offers some worthwhile essays: his account of battling cancer or summaries of the enviro-political issues that he weighed in on, such as ozone depletion and the fossil fuels^-atmospheric warming nexus. However uneven and eclectic, this tome still flashes with Sagan's curiosity, wonder, and humanity concerning the scientific enterprise. Gilbert Taylor

From Kirkus Reviews
The final book by the late science populist (The Demon-Haunted World, 1996, etc.) shows him in his role as one of the finest exponents of science for the general public. These brief pieces apply scientifc knowledge to the exploration of essential questions about the environment and the world's future in a disarmingly clear and charming manner. Sagan begins by pointing out that the phrase ``billions and billions,'' indelibly associated with him in the popular mind, is in fact a parody of his style invented by Johnny Carson--then he segues into a discussion of large numbers and scientific notation. In similar fashion, he extrapolates from TV sports to an examination of our species's hunter-gatherer origins, and from the fragile ecology of a small aquarium to that of our entire planet. Sagan's concerns always extend beyond a simple examination of whatever scientific principle he begins with; he is always ready to look into the human consequences of the ideas he discusses. Thus, a discussion of how exponential numbers grow evolves into examinations of population growth and the spread of AIDS. Sagan spends some time reconciling the missions of science and religion: Both relate to the ultimate welfare of humanity, and each, he argues, has something to learn from the other. Chapters on moral issues of global importance (such as the degradation of the environment), and reflections on our accomplishments as a species, including the prolonging of human life, the discovery and manipulation of the atom, travel into space, and unprecedented insights into the nature of the universe, attempt to capture an even longer perspective. In the final chapter, written after Sagan's discovery of his fatal cancer, he looks death in the face and declares his willingness to fight it. A poignant afterword by his wife, Ann Druyan, ends the book. Sagan was upbeat to the last, and a true believer in humanity's ability to transcend its worst impulses. This book captures his spirit at its best. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Thought Provoking and Inspirational
By John Michael Strubhart
Carl Sagan's last book inspires, provokes, entertains and informs. Although much of the material is dated, each article has a theme that is much more important than the information it contains, and not at all dated. How should we approach the questions of abortion, climate change, military spending, the threat of nuclear war, faith, reason, education, equality, politics, love, life and death? Carl has been my inspiration since 1980. I can't see a day when his musings won't inspire me. While Carl is my hero, I don't accept all of his assertions and conclusions, and Carl would approve. Republicans as a party are anti-science, but I would not put that label on someone for being conservative as he does. Shouldn't military spending be viewed as a percentage of a country's GDP rather than just dollars? Isn't the presence of brain activity just as arbitrary as any measurable property of a fetus in considering the ethics of abortion? While I don't always agree with him, I do appreciate him tackling the hardest of questions. That he does so respectfully and compassionately is inspiring. I miss him every day.

Sagan Brilliant - Such a Loss
By WilesWales
I have to very much agree with "Very Enjoyable" by Andrew who posted his review on June 2, 2012, as well as "Peter Payne," - Peter in Japan, posted on September 22, 2011. They both discuss basically the same points, and I agree that the first and last chapters are the best. Yes, "Very Enjoyable" is right in that it does discuss mathematics, but that is not the only thing, as he does this mainly in scientific notations which Sagan explains in such a way that anyone interested, and doesn't remember it from high school can comprehend. He is just giving a review, and talks about other universes and such (as "National Geographic" prove in an article in 2007 that our universe is a universe inside another black hole), so as to the last chapter, which is wonderful, does give a little more evidence in more of an afterlife than Sagan believed.

Peter Payne is also right in that this book is wonderful, and I enjoyed it very much, but that other books by Sagan (The Dragons of Eden: Speculations on the Evolution of Human Intelligence, Broca's Brain: Reflections on the Romance of Science, The Demon-Haunted World, Pale Blue Dot, Cosmos, and others, prove his genius a lot more. This is why I give it four stars, as this work is Sagan at his most readable, does not give the same kind of learning and reading simultaneously.

This work's first and third parts are the most enjoyable! Like "Very Enjoyable," the second part is takes a lot of patience on the reader's part by the end.

Please forgive my use of other's reviews to make a point, but to comment on each would be the same as is written here, and that would be as scratching on the patience as the second part of this work! Thank you so very much! WilesWales

A brief guide to key skills
By Bill Godfrey
One of three short books on key skills for leaders and managers. The others are The Tao of Motivation and The Tools of Leadership.

Each is written around a brief story about 'Alex', on his journey from manager to CEO, with each episode designed to illustrate some aspect of the coaching/motivation/leadership challenge. Each episode is followed by a two page summary of the particular skill needed to meet the challenge. Each book has a useful bibliography to guide the reader to more detail where desired and a suite of Appendices covering further details on key aspects of skill.

There is naturally some overlap between the books, but each is valuable in its own right and the set combine to provide a thoughtful, practical and readily referenced guide to the key elements in the human side of management and leadership.

The Tao of Coaching deals with such skills as eliciting and giving feedback, diagnosing the styles of individuals, taking account of the skill and will of the coachee and techniques of motivating (subsequently expanded into a book of its own).

Gave me the courage to try, with superior results
By A Customer
Placed in the leadership role for a high performance team undertaking a "McKinsey-ish" strategy study I found myself very challenged. Having spotted this book at an airport bookshop I read it on the plane. I put its suggestions into place, starting from the front of the book, and worked my way through the chapters as they were appropriate. I had it on my desk for the entire 4-month study. It bought immediate results for the team, and me by achieving greater cohesion of energy yet releasing greater diversity of thought especially during the inductive phase of the study. During the deductive stages it helped us focus on a team-based outcome without leaving people out of the decision-making process that had to be managed to a schedule. I firmly believe that without this book we would not have achieved the results we did - the pressure was intense and teams have a tendency to blow themselves apart after the final report is in. The team would not have continued to work as a coherent whole on subsequent phases of my study. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to lead a high performance team. Landsberg's@examples and his obvious experience come through well, and they gave me the courage to try what the book suggests with my team. Well worth the cost.

Quick, recommended reference for team leaders and coaches
By K. J.
I bought this as an impulse buy from another retailer, but wanted to share my thoughts on The Tao of Coaching.

I'm one of those readers who doesn't have the attention span for heavy, deep tomes outside of an academic context. Most of the works on this subject are quite dense by my standards, but Tao is a trove of easily accessible and applicable tools. The "story" is light and Landsberg even suggests how to skip around and still get the most out of the book. It's as if he knew there'd be people like me reading it!

Foot Orthoses and Other Forms of Conservative Foot Care, by Thomas C. Michaud

Over the past 15 years, the use of custom-prescribed foot orthoses has undergone a meteoric rise in popularity. Because of their ability to improve the functional alignment between the foot, knee, hip, and pelvis, many practitioners have realized that they can effectively treat a wide variety of disorders with custom foot orthoses. Until now there has been a limited amount of published information explaining the details of orthotic design and fabrication. As a result, the interested clinician has been forced to rely on the conflicting and often misleading information supplied by competing orthotic laboratories. The purpose of this text is to clarify the role of the orthotic by relating the science of pedal biomechanics to the objective involved in orthotic design. The early chapters review the cardinal planes of motions, locations of the individual articular axes, the interactions of opposing forces acting upon the foot and the mechanical efficiency of the different muscles as determined by their spatial relationships with these axes. This is followed with a detailed review of both ideal and faulty foot function as related to a myriad of structural and functional anomalies. The final chapters review essentials of the biomechanical examination, casting techniques, orthotic fabrication and a flowchart for clinical problem-solving.

I loaned my first copy of this fantastic book to someone a few years ago. I never saw the book or the person again and have regretted it ever since.
This time I'm keeping it handy as I use it regularly to help in the design of orthotics for particular types of feet and foot problems. The trouble shooting chart in the back is great and the drawings, descriptions, and explanations are all excellent. This book covers 95% of the orthotic related problems I have encountered with patient's feet in almost 30 years as a Certified Pedorthist.

Very informative book. Spiral bound soft cover is the way to go

We were recently in Rome on holiday. Our tour guide used this book as a reference to show us what the various ruins were thought to look like back in their glory day. I really thought it was a great way to enhance the tour. Toward the end, we told her we were interested in getting a copy of the book to take home, so at the end of the tour she took us to a store that sold it. Unfortunately, it was only available in hard cover and was expensive (and HEAVY). There was a smaller version that was less costly, but it was also hard cover and, well, smaller.... I decided to pass on buying the book while we were there because I wanted this spiral bound version (which is what our guide had). I was delighted to find it for sale used on Amazon! It is the larger size but was more affordable than the hard cover. The spiral binding is the best for flipping the pages and viewing the overlays. If you can find this version, I recommend you select it over the others.

Regarding the seller, DharmaEmporium, The book was graded as 'Very Good' condition and I think that was spot on accurate. The detailed book description perfectly pointed out the flaws that separated it from being 'new'. It was also packed very well and arrived quickly. I would definitely do business with this seller again. The book is very nice. I was very happy to find this Italian book for sale in the U.S.

I love this book!

My husband and I just got back from a trip to Rome. One of our tour guides was using a pocketbook-sized version of this book and it was so helpful on our tours. So, I got this larger, coffee table size version. The pictures and overlays showing way the historical structures probably appeared and the way the modern structures appear are beautiful and so informative. If you're going to Italy, you should get this book but, obviously, try to find the smaller version - though it can be very pricey. I love, love, love this book.

Rome Then & Now in Overlay

Rome Then & Now in Overlay is a great book. You are better to buy this before your travels rather than after as my wife and I. The book will assist you in having better understanding of all the beauty that you will find yourself surrounded by while touring the historic city of Rome.
