Geography Lesson: Canadian Notes, by Allan Sekula

Photographer and writer Allan Sekula constructs narratives that define land and its political, social, and economic demarcations. He has described Geography Lesson: Canadian Notes as a conjectural comparison of imaginary and material geographies in the advanced capitalist world. In the book, which is based on a 1986 exhibition, he examines the iconography found in images of a landscape altered by mining, of bank architecture and its messages of cultural stability, and of the land as a source of economic wealth as it appears on Canadian money. The seventy-six photographs form a narrative sequence augmented by captions and by the text, which is written in the subjective voice of a single investigator and storyteller. The photographs link two sites: the Inco mine and smelter in Sudbury and the Bank of Canada in Ottawa. The deep roots of their existence -- the creation and distribution of wealth -- are far more intimately connected than appearances would suggest. Canadian bills bear images of industry that draw resources from the land, contributing to the myth of national independence and self-determination. Issues of national identity and independence acquire a heightened poignancy in light of Sekula's underlying subject, the relationship between Canada's resource-based economy and U.S. capital. In essays following Sekula's text, Gary Dufour discusses Canadian Notes as an examination of social and economic discourses that shape perceptions of the land, and John O'Brian discusses the dynamics of a resource-based economy, relations between Canada and the United States, and photography's ability to regulate appearances and therefore to control reality.Distributed for the Vancouver Art Gallery

By examining in detail the material life of pre-industrial peoples around the world, Fernand Braudel significantly changed the way historians view their subject. Volume I describes food and drink, dress and housing, demography and family structure, energy and technology, money and credit, and the growth of towns.

From Library Journal
Originally published in the early 1980s, Civilization traces the social and economic history of the world from the Middle Ages to the Industrial Revolution, although his primary focus is Europe. Braudel skims over politics, wars, etc., in favor of examining life at the grass roots: food, drink, clothing, housing, town markets, money, credit, technology, the growth of towns and cities, and more. The history is fascinating and made even more interesting by period prints and drawings.

Review
"The noted French historian Fernand Braudel . . . argues convincingly that a meaningful understanding of history can be gained from studying how people ate and dressed, where they lived, and how they obtained necessities and luxuries. . . . Braudel succeeds in presenting a thorough picture of how the great trends of history were created by their smallest parts."--Elizabeth Grossman, "Saturday Review

and so delighted I figure I owe the author a good review
By Scarecrow Repair
I am only a hundred or so pages into Volume 1, and so delighted I figure I owe the author a good review.

There are several notable aspects to the writing.

It is not a compendium of dates and kings and battles. It is divided into subjects, such as Population, Food, Clothing, Trade, etc. Each topic is explored as a whole, wandering over time and space as needed, not necessarily in any strict order. You get a good grasp of the Big Picture as far few books of any kind do, let alone history books. If you want to know what life and society were like, this is the book to get.

The language has some quirks, a few words that seem a slight bit out of place, and few sentence constructs which most editors dull down. I do not know if this is an artifact of the translation, or whether the translator was trying to preserve similar quirkiness in the original French. But I like it. It avoids the stuffiness of most dull histories.

It drills down amazingly deep in some places, quoting from town registers of 1537 or such.

It also explains all sorts of stuff that is not obvious. One section, discussing why Asians ate less meat than Europeans, explains this by saying that Asians grew rice and Europeans grew wheat. Rice can be grown year after year in the same field, whereas wheat so depletes the soil that it must lie fallow one year out of every two or three, with livestock fertilizer replenishing it, and if you're going to support all those animals, you may as well eat some too. There is some discussion of the three year cycle (wheat, oats, fallow) being more common in northern Europe and the two year cycle (wheat, fallow) being more common in southern Europe. I honestly do not know if this is common knowledge or if there are other reasons for the difference in meat eating, but I can google away and read up on this, now that I have the basic concept.

This last example, of meat and fallow fields, is what makes this book so fascinating to me. I am learning far more than I would have thought possible from a professor's history book, and having fun in the process.

Review
By Stephen Campbell
What is up with the French since the end of World War II? They are producing first rate minds of a caliber unmatched by any other Western country.

I had never heard of the author until he was recommended to me and now, after I finish Vol II and III, I am going to look for other authors from the same school of analysis. Books like this I judge by how many times I have stopped reading and thought about what was on the page I had just digested. It happened frequently during this book. Well written, and a deceptively easy read.

What were some of the things this book left me pondering?

Cities; why they exist; what they represent; how they are organized.
China; the transfer of technology; social structure and the use of manpower
Energy; how it transforms and what reliance on oil could mean.

Great book!

Brilliant Examination of the Birth of Capitalism
By S. T. Sullivan
This, the first volume of Braudel's massive work on the construction of capitalism in the 15th to 18th century, sets the stage for all that is to come. It is an exhaustive survey of the social and economics conditions in Europe and, to a lesser extent, the rest of the world at the beginning of the 15th century.

The amount of primary research that went into this is mind boggling. Everything you ever wanted to know about how much livestock the average farmer in Batvia had to what were the trends in fashion in the courts of Europe is covered here in great detail.

Braudel is all over the place in these books, chasing every detail and argument to their end, and it can be difficult to grasp the important threads running through the work. In the first volume this isn't as much of an issue as it will become in volumes two and three. Braudel is still all over the place, but since he is really only setting the stage, it isn't as important to try and pick up his overall theory. Volume two is where he really lays out his argument for the separation of capitalism and the market and why certain places in Europe became economic power houses and others didn't.

Braudel is at his best when he's discussing Europe, and is out of his depth when he deals with the rest of the world. There is a trove of good information in this first volume however, and I would recommend it to those interested in economic history who have the patience to wade through mounds of details for Braudel's brilliant insights.

The Sheep of the Fold: The Audience and Origin of the Gospel of John (Society for New Testament Studies Monograph Series), by Edward W. Kl

The last generation of gospel scholarship has considered the reconstruction and analysis of the audience behind the gospels as paradigmatic. The key hermeneutical template for reading the gospels has been the quest for the community that each gospel represents. This scholarly consensus regarding the audience of the gospels has been reconsidered. Using as a test case one of the most entrenched gospels, Edward Klink explores the evidence for the audience behind the Gospel of John. This study challenges the prevailing gospel paradigm by examining the community construct and its functional potential in early Christianity, the appropriation of a gospel text and J. L. Martyn's two-level reading of John, and the implied reader located within the narrative. The study concludes by proposing a more appropriate audience model for reading John, as well as some implications for the function of the gospel in early Christianity.

Brilliant! A crushing refutation of the idea that John was written for an isolated community
By Jeri
This is the best book of biblical scholarship I have read in a long time. Klink so thoroughly demolishes the idea of community that I cannot imagine how anyone could resuscitate the concept.

And what is so stunning about this is that just thirty years ago, in a survey of scholarship about John, Robert Kysar wrote that "'The gospel cannot be read meaningfully apart from some understanding of the community out of which and to which it was written'" (p 247). Recently, however, Kysar admitted the idea of an isolated community was seen as less and less likely.

And now, after Klink, 'Sitze im Leben' appears to be dead and buried.

Klink goes through all the evidence and points out all the usual flaws with the argument, noting the dangerous circularity of depending upon the text alone to explain the audience, the form critics who thought everything could be explained by understanding the genre, and the plain fact that the term 'community' "is one of the most elusive terms to define" (p 51).

Klink, in contrast, relies on plain facts. He goes through Martyn's research on Judaism and asks the obvious question: "Why, if Judaism could have been so organized and unified, according to Martyn, could not Christianity have had a similar recognition of identity?...The fact that Paul went to Jerusalem more than once...implies a wide recognition of the functional centrality of Christian leadership" (pp 60-61).

No kidding. It is striking that all the earliest Christian literature, from Paul's epistles to the epistles of Ignatius, involve one functioning group of Christians in contact with another group, and, usually, many groups. Against these plain facts the idea of isolated communities is untenable.

For far too long, the concept of Christianity as a sectarian movement has held sway, in spite of the gross oversimplifications associated with the concept. Klink picks through all the various research by Malina, Meeks, Troeltsch, Stark, and others, sifts the results, and concludes "community need not be defined territorially, but relationally...(and) The traditions of the Gospels' origens were meant to confirm that the Gospels were rooted in the apostles and in the antiquity of the church" (p 106).

Klink relies upon Richard Burridge and his famous book 'What are the Gospels' to point out that "rarely were bioi around the time of Gospels used specifically for a closed 'group'" (p 113).

Klink further asks if 'the implied reader is assumed to know the Beloved Disciple" (p 162). He goes through the evidence in the Lazarus narrative, the evidence given in John about the customs and geography, which he decides points away from the author having expected the reader to know much about Galilean geography, and, most of all, the implication that the reader must have had extensive background in the Old Testament. All of which argues against John being aimed at a local community since the reader's knowledge, as implied, is so uneven.

In short, Klink states "that the Gospels were written for an indefinite audience, not an individual 'church' or network of churches" (p 249)

Anyone who is interested in this book will certainly also want to read Richard Bauckham's 'Jesus and the Eyewitness' and Martin Hengel's 'The Johannine Question'.

Review
“Worms, infections, and tongue-replacing parasites abound in this graphic novel–and, once you've read it, in your subconscious as well.” — Tobias Carroll, Paste

"Jesse Jacobs creates beautiful art and his comics have a fantasy dreamlike aspect that is at once charming and horrifying." — Bryan Munn, Sequential

“The back-to-the-land arch doesn’t quite capture how sublimely strange Jacobs’ world is, but it gets to the message all the same: it’s the alienation from the land that makes the place horrible.” — David Berry, National Post

“Every page of this book could be torn out and framed. Seriously.” — Nadxi Nieto, Electric Literature

“…it’s the art that elevates it into exceptional territory; appropriately lush, splendidly intricate sequences — each page gorgeously psychedelic with much to pore over.” — Zainab Akhtar, Comics & Cola

“Jacobs’ book is not only a weird and whimsical visual treat, but an example of equally strong storytelling that holds its own, elevating it way above your typical ‘art comic.’” — Whit Taylor

“Part jungle adventure, part “psychedelic sojourn”, part biblical allegory, part gender study, part contemporary commentary, Safari Honeymoon is much more than the sum of its parts; it becomes its own thing by being unlike almost anything else.” — Daniel Elkin, Your Chicken Enemy

“Like the characters, the reader is pulled deeper and deeper into the terrain as Jacobs reveals more of this land’s hidden secrets. This makes for an especially enchanting read, even during the moments of grotesque horror.” — Oliver Sava, A.V. Club

“A demented exploration of unfamiliar wilderness, Jacobs’ absurdist horror story deftly comments on and sends up invasive species and Western explorers alike.” — Jeff VanderMeer, Electric Lit

“Presenting nature as a pitiless arena for survival of the fittest isn’t the most original of scenarios, but Jacobs’ presentation is wonderfully fresh and drolly humorous – a genuinely personal vision … [he] is a cartoonist giftedwith tremendous imagination and one-of-a-kind visual acumen.”— Rob Kirby,The Comics Journal

“The work of an ingenious and fertile imagination this is a bookwhere visual execution is unashamedly at the forefront of narrative drive in immersing the reader in a most intricately constructedrealm of weirdness.”— Andy Oliver,Broken Frontier

“Safari Honeymoonis Summer 2014’s sleeper hit of acid.” — Greg Mannix,End of the Universe

“When reading Jesse Jacobs’Safari Honeymoonthe primary feeling is one of total immersion. It’s not just a graphic novel about a newlywed couple taking their honeymoon in a strange, dangerous environment, it’s a sensory experience that engulfs the reader in an intricately detailed biosystem of horrific parasites, alien foliage, and geometric spirits.”— Oliver Sava,A.V. Club

“In a recent interview, Jacobs said that if he weren’t a cartoonist he would probably have been a farmer. WithSafari Honeymoonit seems that Jacobs has managed to be both at once, albeit a farmer in which the reader is the field to be planted.”— Jared Gardner, Ohio State University Professor of English and Film,Public Books

“Prime strange amusement.” — Ray Olson, Booklist

“In a recent interview, Jacobs said that if he weren’t a cartoonist he would probably have been a farmer. WithSafari Honeymoonit seems that Jacobs has managed to be both at once, albeit a farmer in which the reader is the field to be planted.”— Jared Gardner,Public Books

“What at first seems like a familiar story trope — an older, rich lout and nubile, young wife go on safari led by a macho, knowledgeable guide — becomes under Jacobs’ hands something altogether strange, haunting, unexpected and altogether extraordinary.” — Chris Mautner, Comic Book Resources

“Pixelated robots, ropey organisms, swirling creatures of the cosmos, and even a bundle of intergalactic puppies feature in Jesse’s work, and we really cannot get enough of the meteoric illustrations.” — Madeleine Morley,It’s Nice That

“Safari Honeymoon, Jacobs’s new book, is narrower in scope [thanBy This Shall You Know Him], but in many ways even stranger and more impressive.”— Gabriel Winslow-Yost,The New York Review of Books

“Jacobs makes some of the most intricate, most fascinating, and oddest stories in comics today.” —Publishers Weekly

“The central motif here is parasitic transformation — one species crawling into another and overtaking its body — and, by its end, the book has shifted from an eccentric satire to a vision of union with monstrous nature.” — Douglas Wolk,The New York Times

“That the London, Ontario cartoonist cut his teeth working on TV’sAdventure Timemakes sense, given the almost stop-motion quality of his critters throughout. But the artist’s concern with the squishy, tactile processes of mutation, infection, and evolution goes beyond what animation captures of life, and gestures instead toward the natural world in all its bewildering complexity.” — Sean Rogers,The Globe and Mail

“Jesse Jacobs’ last graphic novel—By This You Shall Know Him—is probably one of my top 5 favorite comics of the past half decade, making his latest—Safari Honeymoon—one of the books I’ve been most anticipating this year. His comics are weird, smart, beautifully designed and always surprising.” — Rich Barrett,mental_floss

“Part jungle adventure, part “psychedelic sojourn”, part biblical allegory, part gender study, part contemporary commentary, Safari Honeymoon is much more than the sum of its parts; it becomes its own thing by being unlike almost anything else.” — Daniel Elkin, Comics Bulletin

“Safari Honeymoon, as an exemplar of the next generation of comics storytelling, takes the medium to a different place, a place that may be best analogous to poetry.” — Jason Sacks, Comics Bulletin

“An exciting work for anyone interested in comics form and the medium’s possibilities, it rewards multiple readings and close analysis…for me, it’s one of the best graphic novels to come along in years. I couldn’t recommend it more enthusiastically.” — Ken Parille,The Comics Journal

“My favourite of Jesse Jacobs’ books, and another treasured addition to my Koyama Press shelf.” — Camilla Barboza, Orbital Comics

“It's not a matter of whether you'll get it or not; Jacobs has once again put together beautiful work that's worthwhile, and so unique that it will have you talking for quite some time. Seriously, you won't find anything else like it out this year.”—Ollie Ottoman,Ground Control Magazine

“The best thing about my reading of Safari Honeymoon is how frequently I was surprised. For instance, the relationship between the couple is portrayed sweetly rather than cynically; they seem a pair of mismatched souls working through elements common to all of our engagements with others that rarely get explored: choice, inexplicable desire, awe, gratitude, grace. I'll buy that ticket anytime it's offered.” — Tom Spurgeon, The Comics Reporter

“Jesse Jacobs’ work here accentuates everything that comics are great at, and serves as a perfect example of what the comics medium can really achieve that no other medium can in quite the same way.” — John Seven, Damnopedia

“Jacobs subverts jungle fantasy tropes by presenting just how precarious life is in the wild without the virtue of a total technological advantage and details that the only way out is to understand how the dominant species manages to adapt.”— Rob Clough,High-Low

“The writer and artist, Jesse Jacobs, has a history of the delightfully weird through his work on the cartoonAdventure Time, so didn’t we expect him to toy with our perceptions of reality? And if there hadn’t been strange creatures, comics would have felt left out.” — Hannah Means-Shannon,Bleeding Cool

Praise for By This Shall You Know Him

"An art comics creation myth, cosmic, disturbing, and beautifully rendered in ice-blue and contrasting purples, with a style that welds the lovely to the grotesque...By This Shall You Know Him is (further) proof that fantasy in comics need not be hollow, generic, or ingratiating. It can be troubling instead. An inspired comic!" — Author and academic, Charles Hatfield (Alternative Comics, and Hand of Fire: The Comics Art of Jack Kirby University Press of Mississippi, 2005 and 2012)

“I went in expecting a psychedelic vision quest, and I came out having experienced a stunning new creation myth. Intricate, upsetting, and fun.” — Jeremy Tinder, Boing Boing

Exporting the Entitled Class to a Beautifully Rendered Alien World
By EisNinE
Jesse Jacobs is fast establishing himself as one of the most gifted cartoonists to emerge in the last decade; he and fellow Canadian Michael Deforge are once again making the Great White North ground zero for a revolutionary shift in the aesthetics and storytelling of the comics avant garde. 'Safari Honeymoon' is the follow-up to Jacob's poignant and disturbing metaphysical fable, 'By This Shall You Know Him', once again released in a beautifully designed softcover edition by Koyama press.

'Safari Honeymoon' is a satire wrapped up in an entertaining science-fiction package. In the almost dream-like mode incorporating surrealist aspects that Jacobs executed so perfectly in BTSYKH, he introduces a newly married couple whose honeymoon takes them to another planet teeming with life, where they plan on hunting and killing indigenous species for sport. Their complete ineptitude constantly puts them in grave danger, but their long-suffering guide manages to keep them alive.

The attitude of entitlement displayed by the couple is analogous to British assumptions of 'divine right' and absolute superiority at the height of the empire, a time when the concept of the 'white man's burden' justified colonial exploitation and oppression. That entitlement might also apply to North American's culture of consumption, and the unspoken belief that the rest of the world is their playground. But eventually, the couple's notions of using an alien planet as their own private amusement park comes to an end, as the baffling array of organisms breach their bodies and minds, horrific parasites and symbiotes permanently altering their physiognomy.

As strong as his talents as a storyteller are, the artwork is f****** spectacular. His dense page layouts convey the superabundance of fascinating and nightmarish life-forms, which are initially acknowledged by the 'alien' honeymooners only as prey to be killed, amusing but disposable pets, or annoyances that inspire righteous indignation. Soon, they are forced to confront the fact that they are interlopers, and that they have dumbly stumbled into an environment where their status as members of the 'entitled class' entitles them to nothing. The heavily stylized art depicts a habitat with the imaginative richness of Bosch's 'Garden of Earthly Delights' and 'The Temptations of St. Anthony'; particularly the left-to-right 'read' of the former, as strange beauty gives way to an ominous, decadent Luxuria, and then the abrupt, nightmarish celebration of eternal suffering that is Hell. This Adam and Eve bring their culture of mindless consumption with them, but end up breached and corrupted, unwittingly joining the food chain as mid-level prey/predators.

Though I doubt any artist likes being compared to their peers, Jacobs' style is reminiscent to that of DeForge, but still very much his own. While Matt Brinkman, Brian Chippendale and the now defunct Fort Thunder/Highwater scene are a more obvious inspiration than Canadian greats like Seth and Chester Brown, 'Suckle'-'Crumple'-'Ripple' cartoonist-turned-gallery artist Dave Cooper might have informed Jacobs' aesthetics (i.e. Cooper's obsession with hyper-sexualized alien flora and fauna, as evidenced in the 'Tryptych' and 'Dan & Larry'). As a fan of European comics, the clean, carefully considered linework reminds me of Killoffer, while the odd and sometimes grotesque tendencies recall Stephane Blanquet and Brit Tom Gauld. Possible American influences include Archer Prewitt, Jordan Crane, and Sammy Harkham. Who his true influences are, I have no idea, a testament to his originality and artistic brilliance, a truly visionary talent. (95/100)

A unique and entertaining vision in the comic book world
By piloo
Jesse Jacobs has his own flavor. It's smooth and entertaining but quite original in the visual storytelling world. Considering this is "alternative cartooning" or at least non-traditional, Jesse goes about telling a story that doesn't feel overtly agenda driven or pretentiously complex even though there seems to be an underlying message as it frames a funny outlook of the pettiness of humanity against the ignorance of our environment. The message is more subtle than it might sound and is told in a unique visual style. Despite the goal this story may have, the design is engaging, quirky and diverting so that you often forget that there might by a bigger principle behind the narrative as you have so much fun getting lost in the details. But regarding what I've just said I don't know if I would say this story is an outright environmental story. It's too surreal to define it quite so narrowly, but it does seem to relate a type of harmony with nature, but also recognizing a certain sense of the requirements of life and with a subtle humor to it all.

The visual style vaguely reminds me of Herge's Tin Tin, but Jacobs has a more contemporary graphic style and an eye for compositional settings and background environments. Visually alone this story is fun to look at with interesting use of geometry, shape, and especially funky textures. The images could almost tell the story by themselves, but the dialogue perhaps keeps the flow more intuitive and gives insight.

This is alternative cartooning to be sure, but instead of taking the common "alternative" road of bombarding you with counter culture-centric quibbles, Jacobs brings you in with a zen-like appeal. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and I'm interested to see more of Jesse's work in the future.

Perfect short comic book.
By Michelle D.
This was fantastic. The story was weird but had a certain flow to it, and the drawings were tight and hilarious and inventive. I caught myself more than once thinking, "I wish I thought of that, or what a great idea for a creature!" The quality of the paper was nice too, and the cover felt durable enough that I could take it with me without accidentally destroying it. I can't remember where the recommendation came from, it might have been from one of the major graphic novel publishing companies, but I'm glad I followed up and purchased this. Highly recommend for anyone's collection.

Brief Description:

Since defining this course 30 years ago, Paul Hewitt’s best-selling book continues to be the benchmark book that two-thirds of professors use and by which all others are judged. In Conceptual Physics, Eleventh Edition Paul Hewitt shows how a compelling book and the most advanced media can be integrated to empower professors as they bring physics to life for non-science majors, both in and out of class. For the Eleventh Edition , Hewitt helpsreaders connect physics to their everyday experiences and the world around them, and provides additional help on solving mathematical problems.

Hewitt’s book is famous for engagingreaders with analogies and imagery from real-world situations that build a strong conceptual understanding of physical principles ranging from classical mechanics to modern physics. With this strong foundation, readers are better equipped to understand the equations and formulas of physics, and are motivated to explore the thought-provoking exercises and fun projects in each chapter. The new edition features a fresh new design, content that is more focused on physics applications, and updated pedagogical features.

Want to teach yourself physics?
By J.A.
I would imagine that the answer to my subject heading is, for most people, NO! But for me it was YES!, as I'd never had a physics class, and it was essential, for research that I am conducting, that I have slightly more than an elementary grasp of physics. I turned to this book, and am glad that I did.
This book, thankfully, is written in conceptual terms. There are few equations - because equations are necessary in science - but you don't need to know calculus or trigonometry to read this book and walk away with a solid foundation.
The author has a clear and easy tone about his writing, and breaks complex concepts down into their simple building blocks so that a typical layperson can understand. I know - because I'm as typical a layperson as they come regarding the sciences.
I can't recommend this highly enough.

The conceptual physics standard
By J. Kremer
I am a physics teacher with a degree in physics and I think this is one of the best physics texts I have ever seen. I have used it for quite a few years now, with excellent results. Hewitt packs a lot of information into the book, but teachers and students are not expected to get through it all. The extra material gives the book great applications for a wide variety of audiences, but the responsibility is on the teacher to use it in a way that is not confusing to students. This is the case with any of the standard physics texts (Halliday Resnick, Giancoli).

Anyone who discounts this book because it has more words and cartoons than equations and math problems in it has no idea what understanding physics can be. Physics has too long been abused as an applied math course, and this book is a welcome remedy for this. For a general audience, this book provides an excellent overview of the fundamental concepts that make our world run. For science-bound students, it provides an excellent conceptual foundation for a more rigorous calculus-based course where deeper understanding of the connection between math and nature can be explored.

On major fault of the book, as one reviewer pointed out, is that Hewitt includes some problems that he does not give readers the math skills to solve. If a teacher assigns these problems, it is necessary that the students have access to the supplementary material written for the text that explains this math. But as a conceptual physics text for a conceptual physics course, Hewitt's book is unparalleled.

Reader-friendly book with online tutorials makes physics easy to digest
By lacorralez
This was my first quarter taking physics. In the beginning I was somewhat intimidated, since my only knowledge of physics were tidbits I had learned from watching the Science Channel and various Michio Kaku shows. However, upon reading the introduction section, I knew it would not be as bad as I had anticipated. The author states in the intro that he wrote the book using his own personal experiences and real-life situations in order to make the book feel personal, rather than like a bland textbook. And I am more than glad he did. His stories in each chapter make the reading easy to understand and remember. They also help the reader apply physics to everyday life.
In addition to the book, there are online tutorials and games for every chapter. The code in the book is the password to login. It helps tremendously. The site even has a digital copy of the book, which helps if lugging the book around is inconvenient. And if that weren't enough, the author even includes classroom videos of demonstrations as well as self quizzes for every chapter.
