This book examines the relationships between archives, communities and collective memory through both the lens of a postcolonial society, the United States Virgin Islands, a former colony of Denmark, now a United States territory, and through an archival perspective on the relationship between communities and the creation of records. Because the historical records of the Virgin Islands reside primarily in Denmark and the United States, Virgin Islanders have had limited access to the primary sources of their history and this has affected both their ability to write their own history and to construct their collective memory.

But while a strong oral tradition, often in competition with the written tradition, influences the ways in which this community remembers, it also underlines the dilemma of interpreting the history of the colonized through the records of the colonizer. The story of the Virgin Islands and its search for its memory includes an exploration of how this community, through public commemorations and folk tradition has formed its memory to date, and the role that archives play in this process. Interwoven throughout is a broader analysis of the place of archives and archivists in helping communities find their history. The book is exceptionally well written and will appeal to historians, archivists and those interested in the Carribean.

JEANNETTE ALLIS BASTIAN currently teaches and directs the Archives Management Program in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Simmons College. From 1987 to 1998 she was director of the Territorial Libraries and Archives of the United States Virgin Islands.

Thought-provoking

This succinct (the text is only about 99 pages), very readable book makes an excellent case for former colonial powers to prioritize access to records. I wish Bastian had spent more time discussing the role of oral history in the absence of written records. A must-read for anyone interested in archival access policy, although the retail price is shockingly high for the book's length.

Personal perspective has strengths and limitations

Bastian's book is a very thoughtful examination of how collective memory is formed. Her personal relationship to the subject matter, however, may have caused her to overlook the larger scope of the implications of a community's lack of access to its records. The discussion would have benefited from a better examination of the role collective memory plays in establishing national identity. It would also have benefited from a clearer definition of terms as the discussion of complex concepts requires a solid understanding of the terms used to describe them; sometimes the distinction between the terms "oral tradition," "heritage," and "history" was unclear. However, overall Bastian's book is a valuable examination of issues only recently recognized in the West as having a bearing on the pursuit of happiness, and which will only continue to become more complex as records accumulate and societal borders blur.

Valuable Reference

Great reference. I've used the 2nd Ed. of this book until recently. A number of other engineers in my office also use this book for quick reference. The best part about this book is that it also contains the original reference chapter by chapter, so you can back track most of the information stated in this book, and includes equipment by manufacturers that we regularly use. Definitely recommend this book, I'm not aware of any other book as good as this one is.

The original printing was excellent, but the 2nd and 3rd editions both have errors in descriptions and equations (the 2nd edition is MUCH worse), making them suspect at best and utterly useless at worst as a reference guide.

Jonathan was a na�ve eighteen-year-old who had just finished school. His cousin Andy suggested they fly to Israel in order to experience life on a kibbutz as a ‘volunteer’. Jonathan had never even heard the word kibbutz and he knew very little about Israel, but he agreed to take part in the adventure and made the necessary arrangements.

He arrived at a fortified settlement in the Upper Galilee, surrounded by a high fence and rolls of barbed wire, called Kibbutz Dafna. It was nestled at the top of the Hula Valley, in the shadow of the spectacular snow-capped peak of Mount Hermon in the Golan Heights. He was allocated a thin, iron-framed bed under a window in a small, filthy room that he shared with three other English men – and colonies of ants and fast-running cockroaches.

Jonathan’s first impressions were not promising. The food was awful and he had absolutely nothing in common with anyone at the kibbutz. He was set to work on night shifts in a bleak factory, on some dangerous and arcane machinery. He’d never worked in a factory before. He’d never worked shifts before. He hated it. He struggled with the physically demanding and unpleasant work, and was hopeless at it. He realised he had set himself a target of staying there for six months, which seemed like an awful prospect. Unable to face the ignominy and embarrassment of running home in the first week, he decided he must do his best, and try to overcome adversity. Kibbutz Virgin is his story.

Loved it, can't wait for his next book!

I discovered "Kibbutz Virgin" while doing genealogy research about my distant cousins who were founders of Kibbutz Dafna in the 1940s, in pre-state Palestine. I first visited Dafna about a year before Jonathan's time there, and shared many of the same experiences.

However, I was a visitor, and mingled mainly with my family and other kibbutzniks, and not the volunteers, who were generally regarded as hash-smoking hippies. I often wondered why non-Jewish, non-ideological teenagers from around the world would volunteer to work in an Israeli socialist community, and what their experience was like.

"Kibbutz Virgin" answered my questions in an engaging and entertaining way, and evoked a lot of nostalgia for my time in Dafna and the surrounding area. I believe that anyone who spent time in a kibbutz in the late 1970s, as either a visitor or volunteer, would enjoy this book, as would anyone curious about what the experience was like.

I can't wait for the author to write a book about Lincolnshire, where my wife's family is from. Jonathan's blend of keen perception and quirky outlook make for very entertaining reading!

A great trip back to a wonderful time!

I loved this book, & recommend it to anyone who has ever worked as a volunteer on a kibbutz in Israel, or ever wanted to or want to understand what people were doing, going off to Israel in their youth to work on a Kibbutz?!

Reading this book took me back
not just to when Jonathan was 18, but it invoked my own memories of being 18 on a kibbutz (which just happened to be the same kibbutz actually, 20yrs later though). I'm sure that anyone who holds their kibbutz experience close to their heart can identify with Jonathan's experiences. This book made me laugh, reminisce & shed tears in memory of a wonderful experience, his & my own. I too have much gratitude to Kibbutz Dafna & it's Kibbutzniks for giving so many young people a life changing experience of living & working in Israel. Toda raba

Terrific Story

I spent time on a kibbutz in the late 70's and this book captures that experience brilliantly. Life on a kibbutz is so unique -- eating meals with often dozens of other people, working at sometimes menial jobs (like in the kitchen, peeling kilos of onions, loading the dishwasher) side by side with people from around the world. Buying up cheap grog and cigarettes in the Kibbutz shop, in preparation for partying (which was often). Learning about the Israeli outlook on life from the people themselves. Making life-long friendships. This book covers it all and the illustrations help bring the experience to life. I don't know if young people still undertake to travel in Israel and stay on a kibbutz, but I often cite it as one of the best journeys I've ever taken and Kibbutz Virgin would be my number one choice as a "travel guide" for anyone setting out to do just that.Kibbutz Virgin

Unnecessarily Complicated!!

I took Calculus AB in high school and wanted to take Calc I over again for college. But, this books makes learning near impossible. This book makes things more complicated than they need to be.

Book not great if you are learning calculus. It might be good for someone who already knows the material

The Positives:

The problems in the text book are pretty well organized. Some problems just focus on the mechanics to give you practice applying a typical calculation, such as finding the derivative of a curve. Other problems focus more on conceptual understanding (which I like). The problems scale in difficulty as you complete the chapter exercises. Another plus.

The Negatives: (why I gave 1 star)

The author seems to have forgotten that the people reading this book are in college and are learning this information. Many are seeing it for the first time. Most college courses are taught by a TA and are about 50 minutes a few days a week. So the TA does not have the luxury of expanding and spending 20 minutes to explain one idea. So we are reliant on our text book for that. Unfortunately, the author provides the simplest of examples, skips lots of steps while arriving at the answer, and doesn't really walk you through the problem-solving approach required. So you see this simple example, which after going through a few times you can understand, then you are turned to the chapter exercises. The exercises ramp up instantly in difficulty and you are left struggling to solve the problems. The odd problems are usually completely different than the evens, so you can't even look at one of the odds for guidance. If you are lucky to find one that might help you solve a problem, you turn to the back of the book to find you only have the answer and not the solution. I am aware a solution manual exists, but even that is questionable and incomplete.

NOT a good book for learning Calculus.

This book is more than likely the worst Math book I have ever had to use. I am actually supplementing this book with Stewarts Calculus Early Transcendentals. As a student (an adult one at that), I find the Rogawski book is an evil trick to play on your students. If you are an instructor reading this book consider this (with respect): More than likely you have a PHD in Mathematics and understand where the author is going with the concepts and formulas in calculus. Many of your students do not. The First Chapter 2.1 deals with slopes and limits. Why not just out right tell us (as Stewarts book does) that this will deal with derivatives? Why does Rogawski teach rates of change and not mention derivatives even once, and then he jumps into limits (I do understand the connection, but still)! The placement of 2.1 makes no sense to me at all! I would have bombed this semester had I not accidentally purchased a used copy of Stewarts book thinking my school was going to continue using Stewart. Switching to Rogawski was a bad idea. !

Models mean profit

New flash, all big companies' marketing is science based, using extensive modeling. Because models reduce risk, skewing the odds in your favor. Every business regardless of size can and should use them. The models in this book are powerful and broad-based and good place to start.

I own an analytical marketing company and created most of these models in a spreadsheet (some of which I was already using). Using them helps my clients make significant and correct decisions. They give focus, direction, and most important, knowledge. Further, size is just not an issue; any business can use them. Most of my clients are small to mediums size, but all have enough data to utilize models.

Many are also useful for startups as well. Entrepreneurs are spectacularly bad at marketing (marketing isn't selling), not understanding that marketing starts well before you spend any time or money developing your product/service. It is this analytical, science-based marketing that sets a solid foundation.

Most​ businesses don't use science-based marketing and 95% of them fail. 80% of entrepreneurs fail in the first 18 months, according to a Forbes article. Models and other tools available set you up for success. It is just foolhardy not to use them

c. i love the set up of this book. it starts off with test taking tips , then goes into the content which i love because everyone gets some sort of test anxiety especially when it comes to having to take a test you HAVE to do good on it you won't get into the program. my favorite thing besides the practice tests is that there is so much information on what to do for anxiety and testing and how to handle it. i don't think i've ever seen a book before that gives hints on how to overcome test anxiety. i also love that it's not too big because that can get intimidating. the link at the end for more study stuff is perfect so the book isn't overwhelmingly huge. thank

This is a great book to study for NACE. It helped me to focus on what to study. However just be aware that drug calculations are also on the test. I did not know that and this book does not go over this. So just get a drug calculation review book as well if you need one.

About the Author
BRUCE GOLDSTEIN is Associate Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh and Adjunct Professor of Psychology at the University of Arizona. He has received the Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of Pittsburgh for his classroom teaching and textbook writing. He received his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Tufts University and his PhD in experimental psychology from Brown University; he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Biology Department at Harvard University before joining the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh. Bruce has published papers on a wide variety of topics, including retinal and cortical physiology, visual attention, and the perception of pictures. He is the author of SENSATION AND PERCEPTION, 9th Edition (Cengage, 2014), and the editor of the BLACKWELL HANDBOOK OF PERCEPTION (Blackwell, 2001) and the two-volume SAGE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PERCEPTION (Sage, 2010).

but I feel like it only touches on some important people/events/experiments and delves ...

I just have to use it for a class I'm taking, but I feel like it only touches on some important people/events/experiments and delves too much into things that don't pertain to the chapter or section. I am also particularly peeved that the author spent 4 paragraphs in excruciating detail to explain how flow charts work as if people don't already know how they work.

Does the textbook do it's job at explaining stuff? Yes. Does it over-explain some trivial topics and is just a waste of pages? Also yes. It teaches you what you need to know, but to me, the book is just okay.

I am a student and this was the required book for my Cognition & Memory course. I personally found a lot of the details boring, but that was purely because of the subject matter. The book itself explains the concepts very well and the author makes a strong effort to "speak" to the reader. He "talks" about himself and his life where applicable and he will refer to the reader directly in the text. Once I started reading the later chapters, I actually enjoyed reading the textbook. I felt like I had somewhat of a connection with the author. Also, the "key terms" at the end of the chapters and the definitions in the back were really helpful. Additionally, when I actually started doing the "Test yourself" portion at the end of each section I saw my grades go up (from an A to an A+). In my opinion, E. Bruce Goldstein did a good job. And that's not just because I'm Jewish.

As a Psychology major, this is quite possibly the worst and most frustrating textbooks I've read.
As echoed by other comments, CogLab is not included with the purchase of this textbook so you have to pay additional money to get access to that. I did not think the CogLab was worth the money or my time.
The author does a terrible job at defining terms and in most cases does not define the terms within the reading. I found this the most frustrating because how are students supposed to understand what a key term is when the surrounding context gives no hints? Additionally, the examples provided in the text create no further depth in understanding the concept. The author simply went on and on for several examples that could have been stated in a few sentences. I found myself skipping most examples because the point was established within a few sentences.
