This book is just like the luxury brands and products that it features: it is desirable, valuable and yet it might be out of reach for many! This is a colossus of a book, considering the meaning of luxury and the type of customer that buys luxury continues through 26 chapter contributions by 51 international experts.

Focussing on the key strategic areas of market, brand strategy, business strategy and luxury responsibility, this book delivers a veritable mass of information, much of which even as an industry professional you might not have realised that you needed. Luxury brand managers are the focus for this book, even though a lot of the information would be interesting to the curious generalist. The book’s price – which is not unreasonable when you consider what you are getting – sadly means it will not be an impulse buy for an average reader.

It can be a bit of a hard read due, in part, to its sheer bulk and its academic nature. Perseverance will be a virtue. Nothing is left to chance. If you are new to the luxury sector this would be a particularly excellent desk resource and initiation to the different world of luxury products. Even if you have been working in this sector for a long time, you surely cannot fail to get some benefit from this book, whether it is additional knowledge, new perspectives, confirmation of existing viewpoints or pointers to even more focussed, detailed research sources.

Buy the hardcover edition. Its really much smaller that a coffee table book and a genuine keeper!

For a long time, I toyed with the idea of ordering the paperback edition but was put off by the many negative reviews concerning the binding, printing and paper. I even tried to get the paperback book at my public library but all they had was the hardcover edition so I took that out and found it well, big! I returned the library book after only a cursory glance, and having already read a paperback edition of Mere Christianity a couple of dozen times considered buying some individual editions of Lewis' other works. Still, the cost and logistics of acquiring a stack of "regular size" paperbacks was not attractive. What to do?

Finally, I decided to take the plunge and ordered a "Very Good" copy of the hardcover edition from one of Amazon's "Prime" vendors. Okay, I'm cheap but hey, less expensive, no sales tax, free two-day shipping and guaranteed by Amazon - for me, that's a no-brainer!

Ta Dah! The book arrived in two days and was in "Like New" condition, dust jacket and all. Reading the "big" book turned out to be no "big" deal. The tome sat comfortably in my lap and as I relaxed with it in my favorite recliner, the hardcover and excellent binding kept the pages nicely in order. Yes, it is somewhat larger than a "normal" hardcover book but actually, it is no thicker. And now that I have it in my possession and have actually begun reading it, the quality of the paper and printing is so much better than a pulp and glue edition that I am delighted with my purchase.

So what about Lewis? Well, Lewis is Lewis, and if you want to have a convenient collection of his works that you can use for both enjoyable reading and meditative reference, then my recommendation is to go for the hardcover edition. It is a really nice book and if you shop carefully, will cost you only a few dollars more than a chubby, stubby paperback of doubtful quality that at best, will turn yellow and fall apart if you give it any use at all.

So that's my 2 cents' worth and I'm stickin' to it!

A great collection of Lewis's most popular works

A great collection of Lewis's most popular works. Every modern Christian should read these books not only for their own spiritual enrichment and maturity, but to better equip themselves to answer a world that is growing increasingly hostile to the Christian faith. His unique merger of scripture and philosophy doesn't merely stop at logically confirming Christian principles, but also gives the reader a greater appreciation for their beauty, simplicity, and practicality.

Mere Christianity- Lewis's introduction to the very basics of Christian faith. It is surprisingly accessible to the new Christian while also deep enough that the mature faith can also be strengthened by it. Highly recommended for those new to Biblical study or apologetics.

The Screwtape Letters- Christian fiction written from the perspective of an elder demon instructing a younger one on tempting men. Despite being a narrative told through a series of episodic correspondences, this is one of the most varied and detailed studies on sin and temptation I've ever read. Especially effective for learning how to avoid sin when you can and how to deal with it when you can't.

The Great Divorce- Another brilliant piece of Christian fiction which is set around some of Lewis's ideas about the afterlife. It's really less about answering questions about what Heaven or Hell will be like and far more about what we will be like there. Most of his ideas are conjecture and allegory, but none the less, based around a very realistic look into the human condition and how God's Word affects us.

The Problem of Pain- Lewis tackles a very common question that becomes a stumbling block for many believers or those who want to believe: "Why would a loving God create a world so full of pain?" In one of his finest works, he explains how such a God not only could create such a world, but that creating any other world would be very inconsistent with such a God's nature and character. An absolute must for anyone interested in Christian philosophy and ethics.

Miracles- In this commentary, Lewis takes a thorough look at every aspect of the miraculous starting with the existence of the supernatural in general and ending on the ideas behind the Biblical accounts of specific miracles. In this study, he looks at the definition, possibility, frequency, purpose, and importance of miraculous events in the Christian teachings. Any serious student of the Word that has struggled with any of these subjects on the supernatural or spiritual aspects of scripture or simply wishes to know more about them should read this book.

A Grief Observed- Lewis takes a somewhat reflective look at his own life directly after the loss of his beloved wife, Joy. Arguably the most personal book he ever composed. He looks at how his life has changed and how it has affected him in his faith and daily walk with God. Using his signature blend of philosophy and Biblical scholarship, he strives to answer some of life's most haunting questions about how to carry on in a spiritual journey when you feel like you can't keep going.

The Abolition of Man- A commentary on how people learn and how that process has been gradually degraded (pun intended) over the years. Lewis was himself an old professor and talks about many of the logical errors we propagate in our modern society simply because it's how we were taught. Lewis advocates for correct learning and true and honest scholarship that comes from daily rigorous critical thinking.

A great addition to any Christian's library, and a must have for those interested in Christian thinking and philosophy.

"Screwtape" and "Great Divorce" are profound works of thoughtful fiction. "A Grief Observed" is painfully autobiographical. "Miracles" and "Problem of Pain" are rather deep theological works. "Mere Christianity" and "Abolition" (which should be read in the reverse order) are thought-provoking and apologetic.

These essential volumes provide a very good introduction to Lewis' thought.

This is the most boring, hardest to read textbook I have ever had to read. In fact, I stopped reading it after week 5 of the class because I wasn't learning anything. It is very poorly organized and hard to follow.

Terrible, from a student perspective.

I thought this class would be one of my favorites, but the textbook saw to it that it would not live up to this expectation. The book is technical and boring. There isn't any anecdotal information (which I find very helpful for moving a student through the chapters). I don't know if there is a better choice out there, but if there is, teachers should make it.

Painful!

There is nothing practical about this book. It is a looooong, purely theoretical torture with only a few examples that don't work too well in the real world. I had to buy it for one of my graduate classes and here I am three months later even more clueless than I was when I started. This book is very boring, painful to read. It doesn't help that the author is clearly biased in favor of traditional HRM and refuses to give much room to more modern thinking. The exercise book is a nightmare. The exercises are either impossibly difficult and time-consuming because the textbook does not offer valuable guidance for any practical problems, or they are an absolute waste of time - students basically have to copy a chapter. I could go on like this forever. In a nutshell: buy this book if you have to, but sell it as soon as you can.

About the Author

DR. LORIE T. DeCARVALHO, PhD,is a licensed clinical psychologist and board-certifi ed expert in traumatic stress, pain management specialist, and peak performance coach. Dr. DeCarvalho is the former Founder and Medical Director of Behavioral Health Services for Adventist Health, Central California Network. She is the CEO of Center for Integrative Psychology & Wellness, Inc., a healthcare corporation that provides clinical care, consultation, education, and training for individuals and organizations at the national and international levels. She is an associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Loma Linda University Medical Center. Prior to this, she served as an Education Specialist at the National Center for PTSD. I know that this book is written for clinicians, however, we are a military family and I figured this would be a good resource for us (and some of our military friends!). It is very easy to use-the book is broken down into talking points, activities, and homework handouts! It really talks about discussing sensitive issues of deployment in such a way that increases a sense of closeness and intimacy so often lacking or lost during a lengthy, stressful, and even frightening deployment! Overall, I really enjoyed it and will be recommending it to all our military friends! It's nice to have tools to specifically deal with my family's unique (but not so unique) situation of serving our country while raising a cohesive and loving family!

Should be given to every military family

After being a military spouse for 16 years, I didn't think that I would find much helpful information in this book. I've been through several deployments, the tension of 9/11, tearful goodbyes and stressful reunions. After reading this book, I wish that I would have been given this as mandatory reading when I first became a military spouse.

Military service is truly a different way of life. The active duty spouse gets weeks of basic training to know what is expected of him/her during their career. They are told whom to contact depending on the situation. The'/re given a clear cut way to seek answers, deal with issues, and address problems. Military spouses? Well, sometimes we are just thrown into the deep end without any arm floaties and told to swim. There are some ways to find help and answers, but this workbook amazed me at how well it addressed areas that are often not addressed and, depending on where you are stationed, considered taboo.

I truly wish that I had been able to purchase this book 16 years ago. The military mindset is often "We don't need any help with our problem(s)." Even with the military, people do not talk about the darker side of the joyous reunions seen on television. No one talks about the stress the family goes through while the serviceman/woman is deployed, or about the tense weeks following their return from fighting. We are offered basic guidance in things such as finance or how to put together a resume, but when it comes to dealing with family issues, there's not much more than a pamphlet and a phone number to call for three counseling sessions. We are not offered help in dealing with the nightmares, the personality changes, or how to help them process the horrible things they saw. Seeking the services of a mental health professional is, sadly, often refused because the service person is afraid of it hurting their career and/or job status. There's a reason why the divorce rate and instances of various forms of abuse in the military community are high.

"Healing Stress in Military Families: Eight Steps to Wellness" is a step-by-step guidebook and workbook that gives families the tools to work through the difficult times. The authors address the issues faced during difficult reunions and reintegration into a whole family unit. Stress, PTSD, angry outbursts, and even intimacy issues are also addressed in this book. There is also a resource guide in the back for further help or information.

The summary on Amazon makes it seem like a book geared towards mental health professionals and not families, but do not let that make you hesitate in purchasing this book. The workbook sections are invaluable, though I wish they had additional copies so that each spouse could fill out the page (or older children). Various scenarios are presented throughout the book that help illustrate how each informational section might be approached and applied to each reader's particular situation. The overwhelming feeling I got when going through this book was that I'm not alone in what I am/have go/gone through. And believe me, that's what it often feels like.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone married/dating a military member - no matter how long they have been together. I plan on showing this book to the base Family Support Center in the hopes that they may order dozens of these books, or to possibly start a group based on the book to provide support. Healing Stress in Military Families: Eight Steps to Wellness would also make a wonderful tool for families of wounded warriors.

Healing Stress in Military Families: Eight Steps to Wellness by Lorie T. DeCarvalho and Julia M. Whealin does seem like it could be helpful and useful resource to clinicians and military families alike.

There is a lot of reading to do and there are many exercises to be filled out and handouts and homework. Because I am not a member of the military I can only evaluate this book as a non-military member. I do think that it could be of use and help to military families and soldiers.
