About the Author
Leonora Tubbs Tisdale is the Clement-Muehl Professor of Homiletics at Yale Divinity School. Her research and teaching interests include: prophetic preaching, women and preaching, and congregational studies and preaching. She is the author or editor of ten books, including "Preaching as Local Theology and Folk Art, Prophetic Preaching: A Pastoral Approach, Teaching Preaching as a Christian Practice, "and three volumes of the "Abingdon Women s Preaching Annual. "She also served as one the authors of "The History of the Riverside Church in New York City, "writing the chapter on that church s rich prophetic preaching tradition. Before beginning her tenure at Yale, Professor Tisdale served on the faculties of Princeton Theological Seminary, Union Presbyterian Seminary in Virginia, and as adjunct faculty at Union Theological Seminary in New York. She has been a pastor in congregations ranging in size from 33 to several thousand. While on the pastoral staff of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City, she directed a lay seminary that offered courses for over 2000 people in the greater NYC area. Professor Tisdale is a former president of the Academy of Homiletics, the professional society for North American teachers of preaching. She is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (U. S. A.). ""

Preaching as Local Theology and Folk Art

A one-of-a-kind, this book is helpful to those doing research into the values of a particular congregation's culture in order to discern how to best preach to a particular people. Tisdale helps pastors do their own ethnographic cultural analysis by looking at such intangibles as symbols and stories in order to determine what is valued and has meaning for folks and in order to determine what kind of sermon will best preach the gospel to various types of congregations. Where the book falls short is in helping pastors discern how to preach against a particular congregation's values when they are at odds with the gospel the pastor was ordained to preach, which makes this a more pastoral book, perhaps to the detriment of the prophetic calling pastors also have.

Tisdale's book is accessible and very useful for pastors.

Tisdale's book helps pastors to be better contextual preachers. She guides them in exegeting their congregations and in preaching sermons vis-a-vis that exegesis. Many of us preachers know that we are supposed to preach contextually, but we learn this lesson in seminary, where the context is very different from that of our congregations. Tisdale helps us to pay more attention to our parishioners and preach to THEM.
Her book contains an abundance of useful lists and suggestions. It is easy but enlightening reading.
