Great Resource

I bought this book to provide a base level resource and to assist in my preparation for graduate studies in business. The book is logically laid out, has many examples for each type of problem, and has an excellent data set (available on Dr. Leekley's homepage at IWU) which is downloadable into excel. The data sets, which are used in the problems throughout the text, give the reader an excellent way to practice the "real world" application of statistical and data analysis. The book progresses through multiple regressions, time series analysis, inferential statistics, hypothesis testing, etc., so it covers a wide range of topics. It is is easy to digest and serves well as a refresher for someone who has had statistics but need to hone their skills. The content is over 300 pages long, but can be covered in a matter of a few weeks by someone dedicated to the material.

Solid content, targeted to beginners

This book is a great place to begin if you want to learn the basics of using JavaScript for website design and interactivity. However, as books go this is not really a text for web developers and programmers as much as it is for web designers.

If you’re a novice in any of these fields, or maybe you've begun down the path of learning HTML and CSS, this is a logical next step. As McFarland notes: “This book is meant to familiarize web designers with the ins and outs of JavaScript and then move on to jQuery so that you can add really useful interactivity to a website as quickly and easily as possible.”

In general, I found this text quite rudimentary—a bit too much for me—although that shouldn't take away from the fact it’s also well written. Anyone wishing to start from scratch will most definitely find the book packed with valuable information. It also gets into using developer tools in Chrome to test JavaScript early, a great practice to note for a book like this. Too often, books teach people how to write code but not how to understand and debug it. Those latter skills are invaluable and the book does a good job of showing how to do this and what to look for.

The last half of the book got pretty awesome because it actually takes a look at AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML), and breaks down topics like JSON (JavaScript Object Notation), the XMLHttpRequest object, and the HTTP protocol. Frankly, I wasn't expecting such a discussion in the book and on that I must highly commend the author and editors.

The truth is that outside of the fact the book was mostly basic in content, I didn't find many cons to the text. There were plenteous screenshots and code samples. I think given the breadth of subject matter and the target audience, this book does the trick. It would be a great text for students in basic HTML/JavaScript classes.

A well balanced collection of examples, background information, and technical details

Do you already know HTML and CSS, but long to do more exciting things with your web pages? If you are willing to work at it, this book will take you from "never-programmed-before" to building websites with interactive forms, incorporating feeds from social networking sites (the book walks you through adding a Flickr feed to your site), and adding AJAX-based features (AJAX is the JavaScript-based bundle of technologies that make sites like Google Maps highly interactive).

The book is very thorough when it comes to JavaScript and jQuery. Programmers experienced in other languages might want to skip the 75 or so pages on the fundamentals of variables, if statements, and loops. But if you are new to programming, those pages will be very valuable. Note that the book will NOT teach you HTML or CSS...those are prerequisites, covered in just 5 pages before chapter 1 even begins.

Once you get past the introductory programming material, each chapter includes a well rounded combination of background information, technical details, and well chosen examples. For example, Chapter 4, "Introducing jQuery", provides a history of jQuery, discusses the various versions of jQuery, different ways to access it, and the relative merits of those different ways. I skimmed some of this background material, because I was anxious to see some examples, but later I returned to that material so that I could focus on some of those details.

It is the "well-roundedness" that makes this book so good. I have taught some courses in programming and sometimes find that some books are too code-focused, and others provide too much background. This "missing manual" book is nicely balanced, and would be a perfect book for a course on developing interactive web pages.

I am really impressed with the book, and would recommend it to anyone who is ready to take their static web pages to the next level.

Great for those not formally trained in programming, but useful for anyone who wants a great overview of jQuery.

As a web developer for some 20 years, I’ve read a ton of books on the subject. JavaScript and jQuery The Missing Manual was definitely one of the better ones, but there are a couple of things to note about it right off the bat so as to ensure that the book is geared towards you.

The author makes it clear in the first sections of the book that it is geared more for web designers rather than programmers. This doesn’t mean that you need to have design skills, but rather that this isn’t a book for programmers with advanced object oriented programming skills who are now taking a crack at web development. As such, you will find fairly basic explanations for programming concepts that keep things understandable for those who don’t have a background in programming theory.

Just as the book doesn’t assume a programmer’s background, it does assume facility with the two other aspects of web development that make up the trifecta of at least front end development, HTML and CSS. If you aren’t familiar with those, then you probably will be a little lost with this book.

As a web developer for some 20 years now, yikes, I do appreciate both the content and style of this book. While it can be fairly basic at times, especially when going over JavaScript (this book is really more about jQuery with only the most basic intro to JavaScript as a stand-alone language), it’s still very useful for myself (and I’m sure possibly still a majority of web developers) who never did actually study development formally, but came by it almost by accident, by hobby, etc. While I did skim some sections that are second nature to me, I did read some that were and they were written clearly, without treating the reader like and idiot, or “dummy” and using humor only very strategically, rather than as a stylistic crutch.

This book is particularly useful for developers who are not as knowledgeable as they would like to be with jQuery. It gives you a nice foundation of exactly how jQuery fits into your toolbox not just in helping you to manipulate your page easily and more dynamically, but making it more mobile-friendly and cross-browser compliant. While there are a ton of jQuery tutorials online, this packs a lot of the same info into one place and organizes the information in a nice way that gives you a good synopsis of the kinds of things you can do with jQuery.

There are small tutorials in each chapter, and I find writing the code from scratch makes it a lot easier to internalize what you are learning, as slow as it can sometimes be. There are also some longer tutorials towards the end of the book that can be challenging even for those with more development experience.

This version of the book (I haven’t read the previous ones) has a section on jQuery UI, which is really nice for those who are looking for a plugin to create a more of a web app approach to their site or application. The four chapters go into a decent overview of the plugin. jQuery plugins are so useful that I feel sometimes that my main use of jQuery is for the library of plugins that are available, and jQueryUI is not the only plugin that the book covers, but it is by far the most in-depth coverage.

About the only thing that I might have added to the book if I had my choice would have been a chapter on jQuery Mobile. jQuery and jQuery Mobile are separate libraries, but they are very related and are both developed by the same entity. Because mobile is such an important area of the industry now, it would have been nice to at least have a small foray into a very related library that is specifically designed to tackle mobile development issues.

But in general, I really liked jQuery and JavaScript the Missing Manual. It is not a book for everyone, obviously, but it definitely fills a niche in my library, which is already full of books on CSS, HTML, JavaScript, ASP.Net, etc. It structures a lot of the material one can find about jQuery online, picks and chooses what and how to tell the reader about and explains why certain functionality can be so useful with examples and tutorials along the way. It does let you really internalize how useful jQuery can be and how you can use it in so many ways to make your coding easier, and, as the book asserts (and proves!), more “fun”!

About the Author
Evelyn Waugh (1903-1966), whom Time called "one of the century's great masters of English prose," wrote several widely acclaimed novels as well as volumes of biography, memoir, travel writing, and journalism. Three of his novels, A Handful of Dust, Scoop, and Brideshead Revisited, were selected by the Modern Library as among the 100 best novels of the twentieth century.

Most autobiographical........

The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold is generally regarded as Waugh's most autobiographical novel, and is worth a read on that count alone, even had it not also been a succinct and typically well-wrought humorous Waugh masterpiece. It may well be his funniest novel. As critic Malcolm Muggeridge comments it is".....a revelation of Waugh's inward conflicts and distresses which no biographer can hope to equal in poignancy and truth."

As Waugh notes on page 5 "....most men harbour the germs of one or two books only; all else is professional trickery of which the most daemonic of the masters - Dickenson and Balzac even - were flagrantly guilty." In his 50s Waugh, with a numerous family, and beset by the high taxation typical of post-war Britain that had reduced
many of his formerly prosperous middle-class neighbors to penury, has become an insomniac. Desperate for the sweet release of sleep, as well as the clarity of mind that only a good night of rest can provide, he turns to prescription sleeping aids. Naturally, what worked at first became less effective over time. He obtained the same substance from other physicians, unbeknownst to any of the physicians. He mixed the sleeping draught (a strong barbiturate) with alcohol, and soon his wife was extremely worried about him. To pacify her, and also because he has even become somewhat concerned, he agrees to a sea voyage where he will have no need of the sleeping draught, as he has always enjoyed good sleep at sea.

Whether because he is going cold turkey from the barbiturates, or due to lack of sleep, or both, he begins to hallucinate, and invents reasonable, if quite hilarious, delusions to explain the hallucinations. Many of us would be horrified by a psychotic experience, and not at all inclined to admit it........NOT Waugh. He was apparently quite amused, relieved at another offering from the well-springs of creativity, and hurried home to write Pinfold.

Evelyn Waugh was probably one of the first "Targeted Individuals". His experience, told through the character of Pinfold, was a much gentler and sophisticated version of what targeted individuals experience on a continual basis in the 21st century. It is difficult to believe that Britain and the United States had such sophisticated psychotronic technology so soon after the end of World War Two, but it's true and Evelyn Waugh was probably one of the first subjects to be on the receiving end of a "targeting" experiment. See Sharon Weinberger's article "Mind Games" which appeared in the January 14th 2007 Washington Post for the reference to Evelyn Waugh and targeted individuals.

Problem solving in physics is not simply a test of understanding the subject, but is an integral part of learning it. In this book, the basic ideas and methods of quantum mechanics are illustrated by means of a carefully chosen set of problems, complete with detailed, step-by-step solutions. After a preliminary chapter on orders of magnitude, a variety of topics is covered, including the postulates of quantum mechanics. Schrodinger's equation, angular momentum, the hydrogen atom, the harmonic oscillator, spin, time-independent and time-dependent perturbation theory, the variational method, identical particles, multielectron atoms, transitions and scattering. Most of the chapters start with a summary of the relevant theory outlining the required background for a given group of problems. Considerable emphasis is placed on examples from atomic, solid-state and nuclear physics, particularly in the latter part of the book as the student's familiarity with the concepts and techniques increases.

The Best QM Learning and Practice Tool Available!

This book is a spectacular tool for those learning Quantum Mechanics! I can't say enough good things about this little book! This is not strictly a textbook per se (you will not get the extensive theoretical derivation of rotation operators or second order perturbation theory, for example.) That being said, it is better written, clearer and more useful than many so-called textbooks out there! While the book is designed to be more like a review book for those that have already taken a course in QM, I think you can almost learn the theory and practice of QM with this book alone. The book has ten chapters covering ten basic QM topics (Numerics, Fundamentals, the Schroedinger Equation, Orbital Angular Momentum and the Hydrogen Atom, Spin and Addition of Angular Momentum, Time-Independent Approximation Methods, Identical Particles, Time Dependent Perturbation Theory, Scattering and Miscellaneous Topics.) There are about three pages of key equations at the beginning of each chapter, followed by key problems and WORKED SOLUTIONS. The problems that are selected are selected with great care, seemingly to demonstrate the most important concepts in the most clear way. There are only about 10 problems at the end of each ten chapters, for about 100 total in the book, but each problem introduces a new key concept or key technique--- and I do emphasize KEY. The solutions are extensive, clear, and well thought-out, with no steps left out of derivations, and comments made as to the importance of each concept when appropriate. In short, there is no filler in this book, and what is presented is pure gold. If you work slowly through each of these 100 problems, you will do well on your exams, wow your friends and neighbors, and be an expert in the basics of QM when you are through. Now isn't that worth $32.00?

This small book is very suitable for those who want to brush up their quantum mechanics knowledge and practice as well as new learners. Its level of difficulty is about upper-undergraduate level.

Each chapter is allotted a certain subject of quantum mechanics, the theory is laid out very succinctly and briefly. Almost no derivation is given. So, one must consult quantum mechanics reference books for detailed derivations. There is one set of fully-solved, instructive problems in each chapter. The problems are designed in such a way that the student can learn and practice a different aspect of the chapter in each question.

If one wants to understand quantum mechanics going beyond the nasty, abstract and lengthy mathematical hodgepodge, this books is for you!

essential for review of what QM is

If you have already taken undergraduate QM course and want to review what you have learned, it is a best book with readable size for couple of days. The book summarizes the basic formulae with a brief comments at each chapter. After keeping in mind the key idea you see the problems which are application of the formulae. The problem sets are so well organized as to help you get a consistent concept of what QM really is. Master it.

Like many small children of the era my first exposure ...

Like many small children of the era my first exposure to what now is known as the Atari 2600 was the box artwork. Seeing "Adventure" , "Space War", "Casio", "Space Invaders" on the wall at my local Toys-R-US they just popped. An early memory of mine is of opening my Indy 500 on X-Mas 1980. Playing it for hours with a buddy then staring at the box/box art before going to sleep.

The book is nicely done. I do like how the boxes warts and all are presented, after all that is the stuff of our memories. As modern made [cheaply] in China books go this Deluxe Edition out box and inner book appear to have been designed with maximum nostalgia in mind - something that they very much succeeded in doing.

Thanks to the author and his crew for this treasure. Hoping there is a Vol 2 featuring Intellivision some day. Highly recommended!

If you are like me and enjoy looking at Atari box or cartridge art, then this book is for you. The book is beautifully constructed. The deluxe edition includes a slip case that pays homage to the cartridge boxes, leather binding and over 300 pages of amazing artwork and drawings. This is a must-have for any Atari enthusiast.

Wow.

Some of my greatest childhood memories are thanks to Atari. All my friends seemed to have one, my grandma bought one to keep us grandkids entertained, and the hours upon hours of gaming that I enjoyed. And that's just the Atari 2600. Which is why I decided to purchase this Deluxe edition, which I understand is now out of print according to Amazon. This book is a testament to the 2600. Everything is first class all the way here, with each turn of the page an artistic explosion of memories. To sink another $80 for an Atari-related product after all these years seemed almost second nature to a guy like me who had the privilege of growing up in such a great era.

The only downside is that the upper corners of the protective sleeve were a bit dented due to poor packaging, with the book itself having a small dent in one of the corners as well. For the money, I'd prefer to not have dents but I don't think I can get another one.

At either rate, I'm still giving 5 stars because I am thrilled with this book. Definitely for addicts like me.

The Inspirational Autobiography of a Great American

My Own Story is a highly entertaining, thoughtful and richly detailed account of the life and times of Bernard Mannes Baruch, one of the most effective and influential men that America has ever produced.

The entertaining aspect comes from his focus on people: his ancestors who arrived in America in the early 18th century, his grandfather the southern gentleman and his father the Civil War surgeon, the many famous financiers with whom he associated in at the turn of the 19th century and his association as an adviser to seven US presidents.

The thoughtful aspect comes from his commentary about the financial, social and political events over his then 87 year life, when this book was published in 1957. As a young "runner" on Wall Street Baruch observed the panic of 1893, drawing the conclusion that great fortunes could be made by buying when everyone else had abandoned the markets. He describes many subsequent financial events in our nation's history and the historical figures involved, their personalities and how events shaped his investment philosophy. The chapters "Learning the Hard Way" and "My Investment Philosophy" will be of particular interest to all who speculate in the markets.

The richly detailed aspect comes from Baruch's wonderful storytelling ability and his clear writing style. One gets a unique insight into the personalities of the late 18th and early 19th century such as financier J.P. Morgan, top trader James R. Keene, Diamond Jim Brady, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt and more. The early 19th century was marked by industrial expansion, particularly in the west. Baruch was an early venture capitalist and investment banker during this era, before these terms were coined, with a solid knowledge of mining engineering and transportation logistics as well as great negotiating skills and financial acumen. His stories of railroad acquisition wars, how the Guggenheim's built their fortune, the founding of Texas Gulf Sulfur and the technologies that made it possible, are all fascinating.

There is an element of hubris in the later chapters that is understandable and beneficial to a better understanding of this rather secretive man. Baruch prefaces his list of achievements and philanthropies with a story or two about the many attempts to defame him by those disgruntled as a result of his investment success or his decisions as the Chairman of the War Industries Board during World War II.

There are important lessons for investors and speculators who are able to read between the lines to peer into Baruch's personality. He developed courage from an early age. Growing up in the rough and tumble rural culture of South Carolina, where boys were expected to take care of themselves and fistfights were common. He took his father's advice to "never stand an insult," but frequently got pounded by the other kids. This made him tough and eventually led him to become a credible boxer, including lessons from boxer "the bigger they are, the harder they fall" Bob Fitzsimmons. He observed his physician father's caring attitude toward mankind, stoking his sense of fairness and generosity while mitigating his natural human impulse of greed. I think these two strong influences molded his later investment philosophy to produce a speculator with minimal tendency to fall into the fear and greed trap that leads so many to ruin. For example, he courageously bought sugar futures, based on his correct assessment that a feared tariff reduction would not pass the Senate, earning him his first million well before 30. On the other hand, he sold all of his holdings about two years before the 1929 market top, then sat and watched the market ratchet higher, and finally went short starting two months before the October 1929 crash. He was not afraid to miss out on the extended market blowoff and he had the courage to go against the trend near the top when that appeared insane to all others.

I often think that young people would benefit more from reading the biographies of interesting people like Bernard Baruch than from learning the diluted and boring version of history found in most textbooks. On any such reading list Bernard Baruch's "My Own Story" would be near the top. I rate it five stars.

Classic, Biography of a great man and stock trader

This biography is a great read for anyone interested in this great man who counseled presidents and was associated with Winston Churchill. It is interesting in showing how far ahead of his time Mr. Baruch was in not only stock speculating but also discrimination and economics. He was a millionaire in his early thirties after a few good runs in the stock market and devoted the remainder of his life serving the public and helping the U.S. when WWI and WWII. If you are reading it for only his advice on stocks just read chapter XIX My investment philosophy. It is one of the greatest chapters you will find anywhere on successful stock speculation. He will explain to you that economic conditions do not drive prices, peoples perceptions do. Cut your losses fast. Sell your worst performers keep your best. Know what you are investing in. You can only truly learn the rules of stock trading by experiencing the losses personally. Here is a summary of his 10 rules summarized:

1. Only speculate if you can do it full time.
2. Ignore inside information and tips.
3. Have a complete understanding of a companies fundamentals before you buy the stock.
4. Don't try to buy bottoms or sell tops.
5. Cut your losses quickly.
6. Focus on and buy only a few stocks.
7. Review and update your investments periodically for changes.
8. Study your tax position to know when to sell at greatest advantage.
9. Never invest all your funds. Keep a reserve.
10. Stick to the field you know best in investments.

Chapter 19 is a must read for all serious stock traders.
