Simple, yet powerful approach broadly applicable to many endeavors

I picked up this book based on a recommendation from a colleague. I was looking for tools for managing multiple projects. What I found was so much more. I have read and re-read this book several times -- each time new insights emerge! This book has become my go-to resource for planning.

The book outlines an approach that includes deep thinking and an actionable framework for achieving goals. Oftentimes, projects go off the rails because not enough time is spent upfront thinking through, what the author Terry Schmidt calls, the Four Critical Strategic Questions:

1. What are we trying to accomplish?
2. How do we measure success?
3. What other conditions must exist?
4. How do we get there?

The author's ability to link these four questions (the building blocks for well designed strategic projects) with an immensely practical framework for putting these ideas into action is really what distinguishes this book from others. The nugget here is the LogFrame (or Logical Framework) "an elegant, concise framework with which one can build the simplest to the most complex projects from start to finish, providing a path through the jungle of complications and changing conditions." The framework provides the right mix of structure and flexibility for designing and managing initiatives in a rapidly changing context.

By connecting a process for gaining clarity of purpose and a path for action, Schmidt has provided readers with a simple, yet powerful approach to tackling all kinds of projects, strategic initiatives, and endeavors. Highly recommended!

Strategic, Simple and Effective

I was looking for a project management methodology that would be easy and accessible for all members of our organization. Strategic Project Management Made Simple is exactly what we were looking for. The approach is clear and simple with tools that are powerful to help you plan well from the beginning regardless of your project management experience. I wish I had come across Terry Schmidt and this process sooner and it would have saved us countless hours trying to implement far more complicated and quite frankly less effective project mangement processes.

We are using this resource to build our project management office (PMO) and lay a solid foundation we can build from into the future. I can't recommend this resource more highly for anyone interested in building sound, strategic projects individually or for their organizations.

Could have saved me years if I read this earlier

This book documents a fantastic approach. I want to stress the fact that this book is not just for project managers as anyone that is involved with projects can benefit greatly from this book.
The author takes a very organized approach to presenting a flexible method that does two things: first, it makes sure that you are executing the right project; then it makes sure that you are executing the project right.
I've been managing projects for 17 years, and can't wait to apply the new ideas learned from reading this book. The material is presented in a step-by-step fashion, making it easy to follow, yet at the same time the approach is easily adaptable to solve just about any problem.
In the last 2 weeks I purchased 10 books related to Project Management and this one is the best by far.

Superb Treatment of the Fundamentals

Of the graduate-level texts currently available, Wilson's provides the clearest overall picture of the fundamental theoretical tradeoffs in digital communications. Rather than merely regurgitate endless formulas, Wilson sets out the foundations of probability and information theory, then rigorously derives his results. Perhaps the most appealing aspect of the text, however (and the most unusual in the modern era), is the eloquence with which it's written. Wilson's derivations never lack a heuristic explanation, and are always motivated by the inherent compromises in engineering design. In this respect the text harks back to the classic treatments of Wozencraft and Jacobs, Michelson and Levesque, and even Shannon. Finally, its treatment of error-control coding is unsurpassed (save for dedicated texts on the subject), being far more thorough and understandable than most "cookbook" recitations in other communications texts.
This is not a "reference" book (though I have used it countless times in my work), as you will not find formulas for exotic modulation schemes, nonlinear amplifiers, adaptive equalization, or other such techicalities. It is, however, a superb instructional tool and an invaluable aid for those who wish to truly *understand* communication theory.

Best book of its kind! .

WARNING: Only for real engineers in communications! . Fundamental theoretical principles for practical digital communications. Precise, will be a classic! . Galois Field, Gilbert bound,Reed-solomon decoding etc. It wont solve your design problems...that's your job, but it really gives an insight to all fundamentals of modulation and coding! . Hope there is a second edition perhaps with some MATLAB examples on coding! .

Terrible

This is one of the worse books I've ever read. The second chapter has a pretty good conceptual review of probability, stochasitics, and information theory. However, the problems are extremely hard given the information. Also, Wilson attempts to describe everything with extreme brevity and the problems are even worse for the other chapters. The solutions manual also is of poor quality, barely anything is acutally worked out. It seems that very little time and effort went into the making of this book and solution manual. You will learn very little if you try to use this book alone.

A good concept

The teaching methodology is one I want to re-inforce in my room - however, the stories and material are written at a lower age level than I was looking for. I teach readers at the 1st-4th grade ability but are 6th-11th grade and they really struggle with comprehension. I would recommend this book for those teaching 1st-3rd grade.

A must have for Special Ed teachers!!

As a teacher who works exclusively with Autistic children, I know first hand how difficult it is to get your hands on easy, user-friendly, teacher-friendly material for the classroom. This book is like a dream come true. Instead of having to page through reams of material it just gets straight to the lesson, tells me exactly what to do, and supplies me with all the materials. I've already been to school, I've got my credential, and I don't have a lot of extra time to swim through long-winded explanations. Just give me the classroom-tested lesson that works, and I'll try it myself. And guess what? It's awesome. This teacher understands exactly how the Autism classroom works, having served on the "front lines" himself. This is not coming from administrators or researchers in a lab - this is coming from a teacher who is on your side. And on the side of your kids. This is a rare and beautiful thing. I wish there was more material out there just like this for us special ed teachers! Thank you. And I don't know what this other reviewer is talking about with the "mistakes." There's a couple of minor printing errors in the book that are fixed on the CD. You have to print out the worksheets from the CD anyway if you want your students to actually do the work and benefit from the curriculum. Anyway, this is a fantastic book. I hope there's more material like this coming soon. I've been using it since the beginning of the year and I'm already seeing improvements in my students' comprehension and, as a result, in their communication skills. I've even noticed a sharp decrease in echolalia amongst several students. Amazing!

Light on Yoga

The author calls the whole of his ways by the name of Critical Alignment Yoga (CAY), and rightly does so. His ways do deserve a name to go by. Gert van Leeuwen gives grounding to a level of detail in the practice of yoga that puts his work one step further from the work of his (non-immediate, but almost) predecessor BKS Iyengar; the father of detail in contemporary asana practice. (Note that I'm a beginner; take my words in this review with a pinch of salt.)

A step back.

Eight months ago I started yoga with a CAY class in Amsterdam, taught by a student of Gert van Leeuwen. We would spend a good deal of the start of the class laying our mid or lower backs on a roll (something like a rolled up towel), or laying our upper spines on a (thick) rubber strip. This first part of the class is very important because it brings awareness to the parts of your body on which you are going to work along the rest of the class. Awareness is the first, if not most important, step in yoga; it is necessary, for example, in order to establish a feedback with our muscles so that they can tell us their state and so that we can tell them how to function.

This comes in connection with a recurring theme in CAY. Yoga is very technical (so involved that the practitioner needs to have a meditative approach in order to tackle it properly, as the author points out), so good will is not enough sometimes. There is a lot of room to better our technique, and subsequently our lives, by getting a deeper understanding of the process. Gert van Leeuwen seems to have had a similar outlook when roughly 30 years he decided to study yoga in India and try to reach to the essence of the practice. Why does it work, and what parts of it exactly work, and how?

It is common for long traditions, as yoga, to carry immense amounts of knowledge but the non-scientific outlook has brought to our current age mainly the methods and not the whys. The whys, though, are implicit in the method, and finding those is what the author set out to do. This amazing book is a result of this process and I cannot thank him enough for making this available to me. I have came a long way through chronic fatigue, chronic pain, psychological obstacles and more. Every new low would force me to new precious a-ha moments. This book is full of such insight and I drain his words trying to get us much of the wisdom of this man.

All in all, the book is a manual on the technique of yoga, starting with basics and finding its way into remarkably detailed descriptions of the asanas; for example, he has an 24-page description on the technique and some variations of the headstand (headstand is a very important exercise in CAY because of the focus that CAY puts on the health of the spine and surrounding structures). Having a lot of experience with students, he also tells us about the various perks of the asanas; for example, how one can miss the shoulder-arm connection and break the control of the Half-Handstand just by having their head hanging down, instead of extending their neck to bring awareness to the upper back.

(Let me note that the following paragraph is to a certain extent a personal assessment and not everything that follows I read in the book, which I've had only for a few weeks now.) As for the basics of CAY, it is there where he lays the essence of his understandings. One of his most illuminating notions is that of the movement chains. Movement chains have to do with how muscles that are close by affect each other and brings a great understanding to what is frequently referred to as the flow of prana or chi, and to the blockages and pathways of the latter. For me the notion has been implicit when I noticed (with insight from Trigger Point Therapy--before being introduced to CAY) that for pain in my arms I shouldn't spend any time working on the arms themselves but I should go instead directly to the shoulders (where the "source" of the problem lied). Gert van Leeuwen makes this notion more formal and goes through all the (important) movement chains of the body and describes them so that we can better understand them and be aware of them while practising. Similarly to the example with my arms above, there is a tendency for musculoskeletal issues to originate closer to the trunk than close to the extremities. This, I reckon, is also an extremely important insight of CAY and it is mirrored to its focus on the health of the spine. Pain in the knees, irritated iliotibial bands, flat feet, all these may be results of a tight midback, or to put it better, it probably is; or if not a tight midback, at least some issue at the core.

An interesting distinction that the author makes is one between movement and postural muscles. The former have a strong correlation with superficial muscles and as their name hints are mostly used for movement, and are the ones that commonly tense up initially and slowly draw all surrounding structures to a downward spiral of tension. While the postural muscles are used mostly to maintain posture, and can normally endure contraction for longer periods of time without tensing up. The idea in the author's regimen is to release the tension, starting from the movement muscles and reaching the postural ones, and then relearning how to use the latter and free up your movement. This is mirrored in his own words: 'By starting a movement from a state of relaxation (of the movement muscles), and then working the postural muscles, the stiff parts of the body recover freedom of movement. It's not enough just to relax, it's critical that you develop a new (movement) structure through strength and coordination.'

It's not easy to summarise the content of this book. Insightful psychological connections (e.g., instruction on consciousness and attention), breakdowns of processes, endless advice on wise practice, from the details of asanas, to the connections between asanas and wise sequencing. Gert van Leeuwen feels like your teacher, not like an author of a book.

Words are very limited here; this book has to be experienced. If you're a yogi that has a bit of a handle on your restlessness and don't mind reading some, I think this book can be the result of many smiles on your face. May the effortless winds of wisdom carry us all to peace.

Finally there is an book on yoga that makes sense:
No vague, semi-scientific or with Indian-mystical claims, but a very no nonsense approach to yoga with a
sound and clear way of explaining the asanas and meditation.
The author is introducing a state of the art blueprint for diagnosing the body in relation to movement.
From this blueprint all the asanas are being diagnosed and logically explained. There seems no way around it: it makes real sense.
The beauty is that the blueprint also functions as a stepping stone for explaining complex matters as
relaxation, consciousness, mindfulness and more.
For me this book is so welcome...

Very useful book

Critical Alignment yoga targets body issues and helps solve them through exercising with tools and of course with the mind too. It has helped me solve very serious back and shoulder issues that had made me virtually handicapped. This book explains in details which exercises --when done properly-- can do what for you. It gives a very sound analysis of the body anatomy and of the sources of very common problems, mainly in the back, neck, and shoulders. It explains in detail how specific yoga exercises can help tackle these problems. This book is by far the best book I have read on yoga because it explains what happens in the body and mind. I recommend it to any yoga instructor in search of answers after years of practice, to yoga students who want to know more, and to individuals that have long lasting back or shoulder pain and have not found yet a good way to solve them.

I have used this book extensively for identifying solutions to transport problems both as an undergraduate, and as a graduate student. The title of the book is slightly misleading as I have also used it for the solution of mass transfer problems. Bottom line the book is very useful and has proven to be a worthwhile purchase.

When Sebold, the author of the current bestseller The Lovely Bones, was a college freshman at Syracuse University, she was attacked and raped on the last night of school, forced onto the ground in a tunnel "among the dead leaves and broken beer bottles." In a ham-handed attempt to mollify her, a policeman later told her that a young woman had been murdered there and, by comparison, Sebold should consider herself lucky. That dubious "luck" is the focus of this fiercely observed memoir about how an incident of such profound violence can change the course of one's life. Sebold launches her memoir headlong into the rape itself, laying out its visceral physical as well as mental violence, and from there spins a narrative of her life before and after the incident, weaving memories of parental alcoholism together with her post-rape addiction to heroin. In the midst of each wrenching episode, from the initial attack to the ensuing courtroom drama, Sebold's wit is as powerful as her searing candor, as she describes her emotional denial, her addiction and even the rape (her first "real" sexual experience). She skillfully captures evocative moments, such as, during her girlhood, luring one of her family's basset hounds onto a blue silk sofa (strictly off-limits to both kids and pets) to nettle her father. Addressing rape as a larger social issue, Sebold's account reveals that there are clear emotional boundaries between those who have been victims of violence and those who have not, though the author attempts to blur these lines as much as possible to show that violence touches many more lives than solely the victim's.

A stunningly crafted and unsparing account of the authors rape as a college freshman and what it took to win her case in court. In 1981, Sebold was brutally raped on her college campus, at Syracuse University. Sebold, a New York Times Magazine contributor, now in her 30s, reconstructs the rape and the year following in which her assailant was brought to trial and found guilty. When, months after the rape, she confided in her fiction professor, Tobias Wolff, he advised: Try, if you can, to remember everything. Sebold heeded his words, and the result is a memoir that reads like detective fiction, replete with police jargon, economical characterization, and filmlike scene construction. Part of Sebolds ironic luck, besides the fact that she wasnt killed, was that she was a virgin prior to the rape, she was wearing bulky clothing, and her rapist beat her, leaving unmistakable evidence of violence. Sebold casts a cool eye on these facts: The cosmetics of rape are central to proving any case. Sebold critiques the sexism and misconceptions surrounding rape with neither rhetoric nor apology; she lets her experience speak for itself. Her family, her friends, her campus community are all shaken by the brutality she survived, yet Sebold finds herself feeling more affinity with police officers she meets, as it was in [their] world where this hideous thing had happened to me. A world of violent crime. Just when Sebold believes she might surface from this world, a close friend is raped and the haunting continues. The last section, Aftermath, has an unavoidable tacked-on-at-the-end feel, as Sebold crams over a decades worth of coping and healing into a short chapter. Brutally honest, terrifying yet ultimately rewarding read

What happened to Alice Sebold shouldn't happen to anyone. That she survived her ordeal at all is miraculous, but that she found a voice with which to describe her experience with clarity, with tremendous insight and with warmth is almost unbelievable, yet this is exactly what she does with Lucky.
As a studen at Syracuse University in 1980, Alice is the victim of a horribly brutal rape as she leaves a friends house. The experience understandably shatters her, but even she does not realize the depth of her feelings or the effect they are having on her life and behavior. She eventually sees her rapist again, and takes us through the trial and subsequent events in her life, which are tied intricately to the rape even though she is unaware of it. The afterward picks up ten years after the book opens as she is still battling with the emotional scars that have not yet healed.
That anyone can talk about such horror at all is amazing, but Alice really allows readers inside her head, hiding nothing from them. Her painful interactions with her family and friends as they try to do what's best for her, and as she tries to convince them that she's 'recovered' come across as achingly real as they were for her. Readers, too, can see how damaged Alice still feels even as she tells herself that she's not, and I felt myself rooting for this heroic woman throughout the book, hoping that she would find whatever justice that she could and pick up the pieces of her life.
This is no maudlin tale, not at all romanticized or sugar coated, which may be difficult for some to take, as it was for me at times. But I kept reading because I was so amazed at what was being offered, that someone was sharing such a personal experience, something that affects more women than most people know. I am fortunate enough not to know someone who has endured a similar ordeal, although I now think I have some very limited insight into what a person might experience.
I applaud Alice Sebold for her bravery in putting forth her story, and I think this book is an important one. It's not an easy read nor one to be taken lightly, but I feel that I learned so much from it. And the fact that this book represents Alice's triumph makes it all the more rewarding.

Almost too close for comfort

Less than 2 years ago, our 13-year-old son Daniel died - very unexpectedly, of a massive asthma attack while on a school retreat. I purchased "The Lovely Bones", knowing the book's premise, for our 17-year old daughter to read. Not sure if the content of the book would be too close to our actual experience for Julia to handle, I decided to read it first (this is the first time I have done any pre-reading, as Julia is perfectly able to decide on her own whether or not to read a book, but still. . . ). I was very surprised to find myself riveted to the book, and unable to stop reading it until finished. While I, like many earlier reviewers, found the end a little too contrived, I certainly feel that the book's strengths far outweigh its weaknesses.
About 6 months after Daniel's death, I had a dream that portrayed a visit by my husband, daughter, and myself to Daniel in what was clearly "his heaven" - also containing a school in a residential neighborhood, a "foster family" which apparently served as his "home away from home", and - most positively - a large number of new friends. This was the best aspect of his Heaven, as far as I was concerned, as Daniel had been troubled for his entire life by an inability to make many friends, and here he was almost too busy to visit with his family because of wanting to get on with his activities with his buddies!
I have often offered the circumstances of Daniel's death - fast and probably painless (as a friend remarked, "Daniel doesn't know he's dead yet"), and that he was able to donate many of his organs - as probable explanations to those who find me so "upbeat" since he died. I contrast this situation with other, well-publicized child kidnappings, murders, and (worst, in my opinion) those events which are never resolved.
Nonetheless - some aspects of the narrative hit home, and I found myself tearing up more over this fictional account than our own all-too-real loss! I was forced to wonder what would Daniel think if he is able to follow our lives, as Susie followed those of her family and friends. Does he still pine for the girl he had a crush on? Is he sorry that he can't see the sequal to his beloved MIB movie? Is he able to eat his fill of cheese pizzas, now that he doesn't have to take at least one bite of his mother's sometimes too-exotic vegetarian experiments? Does he find it annoying that, after years of refusing to allow pets, we now have 3 crazy cats, as a result of Julia "needing" them? Is he bemused by the grief-stricken responses to his death by those same classmates he had sought as friends for so many years?
I am awaiting Julia's response to the book. In particular, I want to know how "genuine" the characterizations of Susie and Lindsay appear to her. I will suggest that she submit a review herself, so we will all know the answer.

An intriguing debut - and an excellent read

Alice Sebold has written a remarkable debut novel. The narrator, Susie Salmon, was raped and murdered in 1973 and now resides in her heaven; yet, her voice contains none of the bitterness one would expect. She is able to see into the lives of those who touched her in life and death. At times wistful - for she will never be able to experience growing up - and others matter-of-fact, Susie witnesses the changes and growth within her family and small circle of friends. Her story is not one about death, but about loss and affirming life in its face, about moving on not only for those she left behind but for herself. The reader won't be able to escape the sadness in these pages - I came close to crying several times - but the overall tone is hardly grim. Because Susie is secure and happy in her heaven, she keeps the story full of light and optimism.
This novel is not flawless, nor should it expected to be. The narrative loses some of its momentum near the end. In addition, Sebold makes the mistake of adding a scene (which I won't describe here) seemingly designed to lessen the reader's regret about Susie's missed coming-of-age, but instead the scene falls flat. Susie's loss is as much a part of this book as her family's is, and to pretend it can be reversed, even if only temporarily, defeats the story. Still, given the first two-thirds of the book, this misstep and others can be forgiven.

The Lovely Bones is one of those books you can pick up and not want to put down again until you finish. At roughly 325 pages, this novel demands to be read on a plane, or on the beach, or when you have good chunks of time available to sit with it. Don't frustrate yourself by allowing a half hour here and there.
This is one book that deserves its spot on the bestseller list.
