Excellent, I use mine all the time ...

The only complaint I might have with this book is the format, it's a big book, and given how often I need it, a smaller handbook (like the CRC handbook) would be more convenient. But then that might hurt the readability.

The book itself however is awesome, comprehensive, readable, plenty of illustrations, minimum of jargon, and useful for engineers and scientists.

About the Author

Becky Koenig is an artist, educator and author, she has exhibited her artwork in the Western New York region and nationally. Ms. Koenig has an extensive history of studio art education in drawing, painting, design and color theory at colleges in the Buffalo, New York area including: Villa Maria College, Medaille College, Canisius College, Buffalo State College and the University at Buffalo. She has been on the staff of the Department of Visual Studies at the University at Buffalo since 2003 as an academic administrator and instructor in studio art. Her textbook on color theory, Color Workbook, published by Prentice Hall, is currently in its Fourth Edition.

Becky Koenig received a BFA from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, and a MFA from the Department of Art, SUNY at Buffalo.

Her work has been exhibited at Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center, Burchfield Penney Art Center, Albright Knox Art Gallery, UB Anderson Gallery, all in Buffalo, NY, Niagara Community College Art Gallery, Sanborn, NY, Carnegie Art Center, Tonawanda, NY, Adams Memorial Art Gallery in Dunkirk, NY along with many other sites.

I teach color theory, and this is the book I recommend to my students. I've tried some of the others, and none compare. It includes everything you need to understand color, whether you are a painter or designer, and it's clearly written and well organized with good visual examples. I'm still using this second edition-- I've looked at the third edition and don't see much difference. Get the 2nd edition used (I paid $8 for it here) and save yourself about $70.

I read the reviews of David Hornung's book on color and one of the reviewers said that this book (Koenig's) was vastly superior. So I bought it. It's okay. But that's about it. The design of the book is very dated looking, classic textbook. The writing is tired and un-engaging and the samples are equally so. The problem is, the underlying ideas of color theory and use are pretty established, so finding a fresh way to present them takes a bit of effort. Hornung's book is exceptional at this task. Beautifully written, handsome in design and unique in its examples it is by far a better treatment of the subject.
And for illustrators and painters James Gurneys book "Color and Light for the Realist Painter" is magisterial.
Koenig's book will sit on my shelf and I'll take it down once in a while to check a reference, but it won't be in the rotation of books I recommend.

About the Author
Maria Alonso Alonso holds a BA in English Philology and another BA in Hispanic Philology, both earned at the Universidade de Vigo. She is currently working towards her PhD, after having completed an MA in English Studies and an MA in Applied Linguistics. Jeannette Bello Mota is a PhD candidate at the Universidade de Vigo, Spain where she works as a researcher and teaching staff in the department of English, French and German Philology. She is currently researching towards her PhD thesis Ethnicity and Gender in Hip Hop Culture within the United States. Alba de Bejar Muinos is a predoctoral researcher at the Universidade de Vigo, where she has also worked as an adjunct teacher. Member of the research unit Feminario de Investigacion Feminismos e Resistencias, her research centers on the fields of Diaspora, Globalization, Citizenship, Gender and Transnational Studies as they pertain to the literary. After completing her MA in Advanced English Studies at the Universidade de Vigo, Laura Torrado Marinas is currently working as a researcher while she finishes her doctoral thesis on the Old English elegies. Her interest in the intersection of language and culture has led her to complete a series of critical articles and participate in different conferences as part of her postgraduate research activity.

About the Author
Vivienne Clark teaches Film & Media Studies A level at Langley Park School for Boys, Beckenham, Kent. She is an Associate Tutor of British Film Institute Education and has been Chief Examiner of GCSE Media Studies and Principal Examiner of A level Media Studies for one of the national awarding bodies. She has co-written GCSE Media Studies (Longman 2002) and Key Concepts & Skills for Media Studies (Hodder Arnold 2002) and is author of Studying Jane Campion's The Piano (Autuer 2007). Vivienne is also the Series Editor of Teaching Film and Media Studies, a large series of resources for teachers. She is Course Tutor for a BFI/Institute of Education MA module for teachers, An Introduction to Media Education in Practice and a freelance media education consultant. Bill Malyszko is Assistant Headteacher and Head of Film & Media Studies at Langley Park School for Boys, Beckenham, Kent. He is an Associate Tutor of British Film Institute Education, and author of The Godfather in The Ultimate Film Guide series (York Press, 2001) and co-author of GCSE Media Studies (Longman 2002). He has acted as an Assistant Examiner for both Film & Media Studies at A Level and has presented national workshops on teaching Film Studies for the British Film Institute, amongst others. David Wharton qualified as a teacher in 1991. At Gateway Sixth Form College in Leicester he was closely involved in setting up the Media Studies department, which he later led for two years. He now teaches part-time and continues to run the Film Studies course at Gateway whilst developing other interests as a freelance writer and trainer. Peter Jones worked for many years in music journalism and the film and television industries. He currently teaches A level Film and Media Studies at Queen Mary's College, Basingstoke, and is also a Film Studies examiner for the WJEC. His book Teaching Black Cinema (BFI Publishing) was published in 2006.

A Meaningful Masterpiece

This book is more than a masterful collection of gorgeous textiles and fascinating stories, woven into a central theme. I gave it a friend, whose family escaped from Tashkent in the 1980s. Her parents had never told their children about their past. But in keeping with the textile tradition, her mother had brought silk ikats with her to New York, expecting to make a dowry for her daughter. All the fabrics remained in tissue paper, unused. Her mother gave me one of the pieces, five yards of heavy silk ikat in brilliant colors, woven in the warp-faced "atlas" technique. The family has gathered around the book again and again. Slowly the stories of their past are coming out. My friend can't wait for her children to get old enough to visit Tashkent. An Essential Guide!

Best book in years on the fascinating and complex world of Central Asian textiles. Meller's thorough study of archival sources along with her deep understanding of textile production in the region combine to make this an important contribution to the field. Her selection of photographs, both modern and vintage are also well chosen. These especially are helpful in understanding the way the textiles were made and used
The range of textiles illustrated, especially embroideries, is quite extensive. Anyone with an interest in collecting Central Asian textiles, whether in Central Asia or the west will find this book an essential guide to the vast array of examples available today.
It was both a pleasure and an education to read. Highly recommended!

The images and colors are very good and so is the variety of Uzbek and Turkman ...

The images and colors are very good and so is the variety of Uzbek and Turkman clothing and textiles.
That said, I think the book caters for the novice, somewhat like a coffee table book and is not interesting
enough for the antique textiles collectors and scholars.
